Introduction
During this investigation, my objective was to try to find the unknown concentration of a sample
of sodium hydroxide – which is also unknown. More importantly, using the techniques of
titration and colorimetry I want to see how these have dissimilar ways of conclusions to the
concentration of an unknown solution as well as how the calculation has diverse procedures of
working out the unknown solution. For the calibration process, using the masses of 0.1g, 1.0g ad
10g of weights I applied them to the balance just to see if the balance is in working order, making
amendments to the balance to get it to the precise mass.
Part 1: (Preparation of a standard solution)
Method to standardise the solution:
1) Firstly, weigh 1.35g of anhydrous sodium hydrogen carbonate.
2) Then, carefully pour the sodium hydrogen carbonate into a 250ml conical flask.
3) Once done, using distilled water, add 150 cm³ of the water into the flask - using a flask to
ensure no spillages occur – then swirl the flask until the sodium hydrogen carbonate is
dissolved entirely.
4) Finally, using a 250cm³ beaker; judiciously transfer the entire solution into a 250cm³
volumetric flask, then pour an additional 205cm³ more distilled water to make up the
solution.
Calculations
Equation - Na2CO3 + 2HCL –> 2NaCl + H2O + C02
Moles of Na2CO3 – 1. = 0.0161 (3sf)
Concentration of Na2CO3 – (9/560) / 0.250 = 0.0643 (3sf)
Evaluation
Taking the entire standardisation process into account, I feel that the practical was really
uncomplicated – essentially all I did was I mixed the sodium carbonate distilled water and this
resulted in the formation of sodium hydroxide. The process of standardisation ran as I wanted. I
had to make sure that I inverted the flask as it would ensure that the solution was thoroughly
mixed as this would allow no anhydrous sodium was left in its powder form and this is important
as it ensure that the result we get for the concentration of sodium hydroxide was as accurate as
possible. I also made sure that any solution was filled right to the exact point and so that the
meniscus was exactly on the line or point to once again ensure that the solution was as accurate
as possible.

use the sodium carbonate as well as a known concentration and methyl orange – with this being
the indicator.
