Classified
1. Simple sentence
Has one finite verb and deals with one idea.
▫ eg) Anne reads a book.
2. Compound sentence
Has two more finite verbs. It may be made up of two or more simple sentences
joined by a coordinating conjunction.
▫ eg) Dan plays soccer at school and works on his computer at home.
3. Complex sentence
This contains one main clause or thought and one more subordinate clauses
which provides additional information.
They are joined by subordinating conjunctions.
LANGUAGE 1

4. Compound-complex sentence
Consists of two main clauses and one subordinate clause, and contains one
coordinating as well as one subordinating conjunction.

5. Loose complex and periodic complex sentences
Loose complex and periodic complex sentences are sentences that usually
contain a main clause and a subordinate clause.
DIFFERENCE between loose complex and periodic complex is the position of
the main clause and of the subordinate clause.
Loose complex: the main clause comes first before the subordinate clause.
▫ eg) We went shopping after we had seen our friends.
Periodic complex: the subordinate clause comes first before the main clause.
▫ eg) After we had seen our friends, we went shopping.
LANGUAGE 2

The subject reflects who or what we are talking about.
The complement
The word that follow the linking verb (to be).
This enlarges on the subject.
▫ eg) the race was exciting or the author became famous.
The predicate
The rest of the sentence.
It expands on the subject and always begins with the verb.
Analysing the predicate
Predicate can be divided into: verb, direct object, indirect object.
Direct object answers who or what after the verb.
Indirect object always tells you to whom/what or for whom/what after the
direct object.
