Dr. Weaver & Classmates,

First off, I have enjoyed this course immensely & have a new perspective on
epidemiology. Through this course, I have gained a wealth of underst&ing as to how
important epidemiology is to my role as a family nurse practitioner & treating my
patient population when dealing with certain medical conditions & diseases when
dealing with specific environments, gender, race & ethnic backgrounds, as well as
social-economic backgrounds & geographic regions.

Through this course, I have learned it is important to monitor, record & analysis
certain public health issues in order to find a way to better treat, intervene, monitor
to see if within a specific population/region the disease is increasing or decreasing,
are goals being met as per Healthy People 2020, & are the proper forms being
completed. However, in addition to those listed above, it is imperative that one
underst&s the incident & prevalence of certain diseases, the mortality & morbidity of
disease, fatality rates, etc. when dealing with epidemiology.

However, when dealing with ethics & epidemiology not all guidelines can be
identified when dealing with ethically issues which leaves much of ethics to the
individual researcher & to the discretion of the Institutional Review Board (IRB) or
Research Ethics Committees (REC). The

,IRB/REC have the authority to review all the information about a research project &
assess the information, & how researchers fulfill their obligations about disclosing
information pertaining to a research project. However, in epidemiology, the
researcher may not be able to inform all subjects but has a duty to inform the public
& have a duty to the communities to inform the public about health threats & major
determinants of health & causes of diseases (Piasecki, Waligora, & Dranseika, 2017).

As a Nurse Practitioner, there is multiple aspects to consider, consider when dealing
with individuals & the public when communicating information which can influence
multiple individuals & how ethics, morals, commitment, education & treatment all
play a part.

Tina

Thank you for your post! I also feel that I have gained a new perspective &
appreciation of epidemiology. I, too, have learned that it is vital to monitor,
record, & analyze public health issues.

For example, when researching surveillance for influenza, I learned that the CDC
collects & analyzes information regarding the flu weekly & puts it in a report
called FluView. Health departments, public health & clinical laboratories, &
healthcare providers are required to report all suspected cases of influenza to the
CDC. Tracking flu related illnesses, the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention
can explore when & where outbreaks occur, assess the impact flu on
hospitalizations, & review what viruses are in circulation. The CDC further
examines information when preparing the next season’s influenza vaccine (CDC,
2017).

, With technological advancements in clinical & genetic medicine, it is important
that epidemiology & ethics are continually evaluated. Rapid advancements in
storage, computation, & data networking make surveillance & analysis of data
straightforward &
