Read through the scenario below and answer the questions that follow.
Jungle Dynamics is an organisation focusing on the sustainable management of
forests and jungles around the world. The core aim of the business is to protect
forest habitats from climate change and to monitor wildlife diversity in these habitats.
During the start-up phase of the organisation, the company had many struggles.
Many people who joined the organisation were volunteer environmentalists who had
no background and formal education relating to environmental science and ecology.
These prerequisites are critical for senior positions at Jungle Dynamics. The
performance management system set up after a few years of the organisations’
establishment brought several issues to the table. Volunteers were unsatisfied and
angry that the management placed them in junior positions with no prospects of
development unless they studied a formal qualification. The employees requested
opportunities for further development on several occasions but these requests fell on
deaf ears. These employees were continuously rated unfairly for not having the
required skills and not meeting the required organisational goals. This resulted in
managers and staff members in constant disagreement about ratings. Eventually the
organisation was taken to the CCMA by these employees. The pertinent issue was
as a result of not linking individual and organisational performance properly. The
organisation has contacted you to help consult and provide guidance concerning
their performance management practices.
