Benchmark – Evidence-Based Practice Project: PICOT Paper Demographics and Health Concern
Adult pre/post-operative patients face adversities due to inconsistencies in educational practices by healthcare workers. Dayucos et al. (2019) argued that preoperative education reduces the risks of cognitive and mental complications like anxiety. It hinders timely recovery among a significant population of adult patients. Physically, it elevates the chances of hypertension, causing an increased rate of bleeding during or after surgery (Bedaso & Ayalew, 2019). The casual or dismissive preoperative education escalates affiliations even after the procedure, a facet that healthcare professionals can resolve. Dayucos et al. (2019) and Klaiber et
al. (2018) concur that delayed patient education escalates the chances of negative surgical care outcomes.
Proposed Intervention
Evidence-based practices suggest that healthcare professionals must consider health literacy as part of an effective strategy to minimize postoperative complications. In their study, Klaiber et al. (2018) indicated that adults' susceptibility to hypertension before and after surgery is eliminated through comprehensive preoperative education. They used the example of visceral surgeries to show how they managed to minimize the complications mentioned above among the
patients (Klaiber et al., 2018). The most imperative aspect is knowing patients' dos and don’ts for
pre/postoperative situations. Pelkowski et al. (2021) remind healthcare professionals that preoperative patient education is a fundamental aspect of care provision. The target is to provide adequate preoperative patient education three to five days prior to the surgical procedure.
The proposed intervention considers all adult patients since the target is to improve their health outcomes. It promotes health equity as preoperative education deviates from demographic
