📌 How successful were the British attempts to take
control of
lands in the sub-continent between 1750 and 1856? [14]


The English had always desired to trade with India and their
main interest were
spices, cotton, silk and Christians but the English were not
the first Europeans to
do trade with India. In 1498 Portuguese explorer Vasco De Gama
visited India and
established a base in Goa in 1510.
• In 1600, Queen Elizabeth I granted permission to British
East India Company,
giving it a Monopoly for all British trade east of Africa.

In 1661 they got a charter to keep warships, soldiers and
weapons for the defense of
their factories.
• The first serious efforts made by the British for trade
with India was made in 1608
through captain Hawkins who requested the Mughal Emperor
Jahangir to set up a
factory in Surat. The request was turn down pressure by the
Portuguese.
