‘n Elfjarige seun word wakker deur die loop van die nag.
Iets sê vir hom om sy pa te keer. Hy weet nie wat dit is nie,
so hy stap in die donkerte na sy pa se studeerkamer waar
‘n lig brand. Die seun is doodbang. Sy hartklop is hard en
vinnig. Hy hoor papiere wat skuifel en sien sy pa se skoene
onder die deur. Wanneer die seun die deur oopmaak sien
hy sy pa oor die lessenaar gebuig met ‘n 9mm pistool in sy
hand na sy kop gerig. Die seun sal die beeld nooit vergeet
nie. Sy pa lyk asof hy niks anders as die pistool sien nie.
Die seun wonder of sy pa nie dalk ‘n monster is nie. Hy
probeer homself kalmeer. Hy roep na sy pa toe en sy pa lyk
asof hy weer realiteit herken. Hy sê dat die seun nie moet
bekommerd wees nie en dat alles oukei is. Hy vra dat die
seun dit ‘n geheim moet hou en bed toe gaan. Die pa bêre
‘n koevert in sy sak en sê die seun se naam. Al wat die
seun hoor is ‘n eggo.
Prologue - Sign on
An eleven-year-old boy wakes up during the night. Something tells him he should stop his dad.
He doesn’t know what it is, so he walks in the dark to his dad’s study where a light is burning.
The boy is terrified. His heartbeat is loud and fast. He hears papers rustling and sees his dad’s
shoes under the study door. When he opens the door, he sees his dad leaning over the desk with
a 9mm pistol aimed at his head. The boy will never forget this image. His dad looks like he
doesn’t notice anything besides the pistol. The boy wonders if his dad isn’t maybe a monster. He
tries to calm himself down. He calls out to his dad and he looks like he notices reality again. He
says that the boy shouldn’t worry and everything will be fine. He asks that the boy keeps it a
secret and that he should go back to bed. The dad puts an envelope in his pocket and says the
boy’s name. All he hears is an echo.
Hoofstuk 1- Sluimerige grys selle, Polyfilla en rigtones
Greg se foon lui hom wakker in die oggend. Hy trek sy kussing
oor sy kop, maar sien dat dit sy meise, Nicole, is wat bel. Greg
weet daar sal moeilikheid wees as hy nie antwoord nie. Nicole
groet vir Greg vriendelik. Hy kan haar voor hom sien: fyn neusie,
lang, blonde hare wat sy agter haar ore druk en blou oë
waarmee sy flankeer. Nicole vra of Greg nog geslaap het omdat
dit ‘n skooldag is. Greg noem haar Nicksie en sê dat sy vriend,
Eckardt hom gewoonlik soggens na sy draf wakker maak.
Nicole vra hoe dit met Eckardt gaan en Greg hou nie daarvan
nie. Hy verander die onderwerp en vra hoe dit in Johannesburg
gaan. Nicole sê sy mis vir Greg. Sy het die vorige aand oor hulle
gedroom. In die droom het haar ouers ‘n groot partytjie met
gaste gehad. Nicole en Greg het weggeglip om by die
swembad alleen te wees. Hulle het gesoen toe die swembadligte aangegaan het en al die gaste
hulle gesien het. Nicole se ouers was kwaad en die gaste was bly om jong liefde te sien.
Nicole wonder of hulle verhouding kan werk. Greg dink hulle kom goed oor die weg, maar iets
wat in Jeffreysbaai gebeur het maak hom twyfel. Hy weet nie of hy vir Nicole kan vertrou nie.
Greg kom agter hy is laat en sê totsiens. Baie seuns in die koshuis terg vir Greg oor hy laat is.
Almal anders is al in die uniform met wit hemde en geel dasse aangetrek.
Greg gaan na Eckardt se kamer toe, maar hy is nie daar nie. Sy kamer is netjies en die bed is al
opgemaak. Gref dink hy is al eetsaal toe en bel hom. Eckardt se foon lui in die kamer in sy kas.
Greg se naam “G4ce” flits op die skerm.
Chapter 1 - Slimey grey cells, Polyfilla and ringtones
Greg’s phone wakes him up in the morning. He pulls his pillow over his head but sees that his
girlfriend, Nicole, is calling him. He knows that there will be trouble if he doesn’t answer. Nicole
greets Greg cheerfully. He can see her before him: delicate nose, long, blonde hair that she puts
behind her ears and blue eyes that she flirts with. She asks if Greg was still sleeping since it’s a
school day. Greg calls her Nicksie and says that his friend, Eckhardt, normally wakes him up
after his morning jogs. Nicole asks how Eckardt is doing and Greg doesn’t like it. He instead
changes the subject and asks how it’s going in Johannesburg. Nicole says she misses Greg.
She dreamt about them the previous night. In the dream, her parents hosted a party with guests.
Nicole and Greg slipped away to be alone by the pool. They were making out when the pool
lights went on and all the guests saw them. Nicole’s parents were angry and the guests were
happy to see young love.
Nicole wonders if their long-distance relationship
can work. Greg thinks they get along well, but
something that happened in Jeffreys bay makes
him doubt it. He doesn’t know if he can trust Nicole.
Greg realises that he’s late and says bye to Nicole.
Many boys in the boarding house tease Greg that
he’s late. Everyone else is already dressed in their
uniform of white shirts and yellow ties.
Greg goes to Eckardt’s room, but he’s not there. His
room is neat and the bed is already made. Greg
assumes that Eckardt went to the mess hall and
calls him. The phone rings in the room and Greg
finds it in his cupboard. Greg’s name flashes on the
screen as “G4ce”.
