Tale of Dave

The fictional character for my movie is a squadron commander named Dave, who works in a

management position essentially. Dave did not start off as a respected person. When Dave first assumed

command, he naturally had people working under him in the squadron and he hardly completed any

tasks himself. Not only was he complacent in his work, he blocked out others opinions and criticism

from his subordinates, which made him an impossible person to talk to. The commander position really

was getting to his head, not for the better. Fortunately, overtime from trial and error, Dave learned how

to become approachable for his workforce. After enough effective feedback from his front line

supervisors, He has learned the key to being a successful commander is being selfless. When concerns

within the squadron occurred, he encouraged his members to come directly to his office regardless of

rank. Setting that standard was vital in his effort to gain a positive reputation. Now, Dave is well known

for his optimism and gregarious personality from all those who serve under his command.

Operating as a squadron commander can be very stressful, particularly if leadership under the

commander are not actively monitoring the efficacy of individuals within the unit. Dave’s whole

persona transformed overtime for the better, but his focus was more on the attitude of employees than

meeting the work standard. One day, it came to Dave’s attention that there has been a trend of multiple

people failing PT tests, skipping training, and not completing tasks on time. This shocking trend

became an eye opener for Dave, he was disappointed in his squadron’s effectiveness. The commander’s

style of operating undoubtedly changed after he self-reflected on his lack of awareness, mindfulness,

and attention to detail of workers performance. This occurrence was the last straw for Dave, he started

to care more about his personal work performance and his subordinates. The commander was truly

motivated to be better and set a higher standard. He created core values for everyone to refer to on how

to be a great Airmen. The values of integrity first, excellence in all we do, and service before self was

embodied by the squadron. Work characteristics as task, knowledge, social and work context are
