SPED 8405 ASSIGNMENT 2
Brief Research Paper (30 points total) Due WEEK 9
Select a topic related to consultation and/or collaboration in special education. Students
will review at least 10 research articles on the chosen topic (published within the last 10
years) and write a 10-12 page paper reviewing the research reviewed. Articles chosen must
be from peer-reviewed journals and should be research articles, not reviews. Papers should
review not just the content of the research studies but also the quality of the research itself.
Information should be synthesized to evaluate the effectiveness of the
model/theory/approach addressed and should not just summarize each article
independently. Careful attention should be paid to the rubric below regarding details that
should be included in the paper. Students should conclude with a statement about the
effectiveness of the model/theory/approach based on the research reviewed. Papers will be
graded for content and quality of writing.

Perceptions of Regular and Special Education Teachers Towards Collaborative Teaching and
Inclusion.
The article “Collaborative classroom practice for inclusion: Perspectives of classroom
teachers and learning support/resource teachers” (Mulholland & O'Connor, 2016) explores the
perception and experiences of teachers towards collaborative teaching among regular and special
education teachers. The article also sought to determine the extent to which teachers collaborate
among themselves as well as explore the benefit and barriers to collaborative teaching. Using a
mixed-method, Classroom Teachers, Resource Teachers, and Learning Support Teachers were
studied to determine their perception towards collaborative teaching, the experience they have
had with the practice, the extent to which they are willing to collaborate with each other, and the
various barriers they face and benefits from collaboration. Mulholland & O'Connor, 2016
confirmed that teachers are increasingly acknowledging the value of collaborative teaching. They
perceive collaborative teaching and planning to be hugely aspirational. However, the teacher
admitted to facing several challenges in relation to time constraints, poor planning, and little
professional advancement in collaborative teaching.
