What are some questions the nurse should ask herself before accepting this assignment? Include
your rational.

It is important for nurses to be active client advocates because they are on the frontlines of
bedside patient care and they are the ones who work with the clients in their care. Part of the
nurses’ job is to protect the health, safety, and welfare of every patient (Cipriano, 2010). This
includes ensuring that competent staff are appropriately assigned to patients that they can provide
effective care for.

Questions that the nurse should ask before accepting an assignment include:

What tasks are included in this assignment?
Rationale: This is an important basic question because it clarifies the patient’s needs and allows
the nurse to determine if she has the capability to carry these tasks out.

Do I have the skill set to provide care and safety for this patient?
Rationale: If the patient is in a specialized unit, then the knowledge and skill sets for this specific
population are vital to have, and if the nurse does not have these, they will not be able to provide
the appropriate care that the patient requires.

Does any part of this assignment conflict with my personal religious, moral or ethical values and
beliefs?
Rationale: Hospitals typically have policies that allow nurses to refuse an assignment on the
basis that it conflicts with personal religious, moral or ethical values and beliefs (Waller-Wise,
2006). It is important for a nurse to be aware of herself and her own mentality before taking on
an assignment because any personal conflict can compromise patient care and safety.

Hi Professor,
I think that it is important that a nurse maintain their integrity and hold their position when
refusing an assignment because it is not safe, regardless of disciplinary action. A new job or a
disciplinary mark on a record is nothing compared to the moral and legal repercussions that a
nurse may receive if the patient’s safety is compromised because the nurse is unable to provide
the necessary safety and care for that patient (Singh, 2015). Once the nurse has accepted the
assignment, it is the nurses’ responsibility to ensure the health and safety of the patient, so if the
assignment is unsafe, and regardless of the disciplinary actions, the nurse should not accept the
assignment because not only will the nurses’ license be in jeopardy, everyone’s safety needs to be
the priority.
