, CHILDHOOD OBESITY 1
Implementation Plan
PICOT
For Children between 1 and 10 years old with a BMI > 95th percentile (P), how
effective is dietary modification, along with exercise (I), in decreasing BMI and diagnosis of
diabetes (O) over the next 12 months (T)?
Thought Process
Obesity has been increasing over the last few decades. Education regarding the lack of
physical activity, the need for healthier options for meals and the removal of candy or soda
has been provided to parents. However, childhood obesity has still been on the rise. When
does a physician, parent or family determine a child is obese? When does a physician
determine that a child is healthy? Would a physician use BMI to determine if obese and if the
patient has an increased risk of being diabetic? There are many studies to reference regarding
childhood obesity and diabetes. When medical professionals and parents work together to
create a plan with diet, exercise and other healthy interventions, it has been proven to reduce
weight, decrease BMI and reduce the diagnosis of diabetes in adolescents and early adults.
Implementation Plan
The objective is to create a plan for each child, parent and medical professional to
work together to execute evidenced based strategies to guide our youth into healthier lifestyles
at an early age in order to reduce the chances of diabetes.
Children between the ages of 1 and 10 years old will be the population of focus. The
parents and providers will be included in the care, education and the interventions necessary.
Well child visits are required from birth, 2 months, 4 months, 6 months and so on until yearly
visits are recommended for every child. During these visits’ education material is provided for
parents in order to guide them in the monitoring of the progression of growth as well as
