Experiment 5: Ray Optics

Introduction:

The way our eyes perceive and adjust to the world around us greatly influences how we

have learned to survive in the world. This becomes even more evident in the way we have

developed and made use of the properties of light to create fascinating devices like glasses,

telescopes, and light prisms. This was made possible using ray optics as a model to study the

way light propagated through an optical system.

In this lab, the optical system in question are two lenses. The two most common types of

lenses are: converging lens and diverging lens. Converging lenses are convex and have a thicker

center than edges. They focus light rays outward. Diverging lenses are concave and have a

thinner center. They focus light rays inward. Images created by the lenses can be either real or

virtual, that’s real images being inverted. The main idea behind this lab is to learn to measure the

index of refraction of a lens, find out if the material in two lenses is the same, and measure the

magnification of a telescope based on the difference between apparent size and magnified size.

Procedure:

First, for the warm-up exercises, a lamp, a converging lens, and a screen was set up on

the optical track such that an image was projected of the source on the screen. Screen and lens

were adjusted until a focused, inverted, real image of the source shape appeared on the screen.

Taking care that the image’s height matched the height of the light source, the object distance

and image distance were recorded (Data). Next, the lens and screen were adjusted so that the

image projected was real, inverted, and had a magnification of 1.5. The object distance and

image distance at 1.5 magnification were then recorded (Data).

To assess whether the image on the screen would be altered if the upper half of the lens

was blocked, an index card was used to cover the top half of the lens. Any observations were

noted down and compared against any predictions made prior to the index card covering the lens

(Data).

To do Experiment 1, one lens of 10.3 cm was placed onto the track and the distance at

which the image projected became clear after adjusting was noted down. Next, another lens of

20.7 cm was placed onto the track and the distance at which the image projected became clear

after adjusting was noted down. The index of refraction, n values obtained from both lenses were

compared to determine if they were made from the same material.

For Experiment 2, the 20 cm focal point lens was put on the track at its midpoint and the

screen was adjusted till an image formed on it. The type of image formed from the lens was

recorded (Data). Next, using the second lens as an eyepiece, the second lens was placed at the

forefront of the track and used to assess the type of image it formed again with the help of an

object – pen tip – placed on the table a distance away from the track. The apparent size of the

object as it was seen through the lens and without the lens at the same distance was also noted.

Figure 1: Set up for the experiment with slight differences in Experiment 2, where a second lens

of focal length 10 cm was used to replace the screen.
