Case study
Nombulelo is a 16 years old teenager, who is the head of her family of three. Her siblings are
8years and 11 years old, respectively. They were living with their parents who passed away
due to COVID-19 in 2020, and since the funeral they have been alone, without any assistance
from their extended family members. Nombulelo has been dependent on her school friend for
support, without any adult guidance. Their extended family is staying in another province,
making it difficult for them to receive the support they need. Nombulelo is responsible for
upkeeping the household, by ensuring that the house is clean, her younger siblings are
always having clean clothes and their schoolwork is supervised. She is doing grade 10, that
she is repeating as she is not coping with all the responsibilities upon her shoulders.
The family is financially stable, as the parents were employed and secured life policies that
would maintain their children after they have passed on.
She was made aware by the schoolteacher that her 11years old brother was caught using
drugs in the school toilet with his friends, something that brought some additional stress on
her. As the older child in the household, she was called by the local social worker to make an
appointment with her, so that the family circumstances could be assessed for planning and
implementing appropriate interventions.
