Step Two:
I were to informally outline one of the paragraphs I talked about in the video,
the outline would look like this:
My neighbor’s dog is ugly.
- he has mange/patchy fur
- tongue hangs out
- ears look like lace
I didn’t use fancy Roman numerals or anything. I just stated the claim (table top)
and then the supporting evidence (bricks) underneath it. This informal outline even
looks like a table.
, Now consider this: What if I added this sentence to that paragraph from the
video: “Sometimes, he smells like rotten eggs. I think he gets into the trash.”
Would that sentence work in my paragraph? Let’s see by adding that rotten-
egg information to the informal outline.

- smells like rotten eggs
Hey, this is a nice concrete detail I’ve added about how the dog smells. But does that
concrete block fit under the tabletop claim of “the dog is ugly?”
