Examples – sexual assault, rape, financial abuse, abuse, coercive or controlling behaviour
and even murder.
Typical offender – the vast majority of offenders are men. Offenders are usually partners of
the victim or ex partners. Family members can also be victims.
Typical victim – most of the victims of domestic abuse are females. Women at the highest
risk of domestic abuse are women aged 16-24, divorced women, disabilities and lower
income women. Males are very unlikely to be victims of domestic abuse, although It can
happen.
Level of public awareness – the level of public awareness about domestic abuse is low. This
may be due to the abuse happening in the home, so it is hidden away, victims are too scared
to report crimes for many reasons seen in 1.2. As people don’t report domestic abuse in
statistics it looks like domestic abuse is a small problem which isn’t correct, and the police
may see the event as “only a domestic” so will not intervene. After heavy campaigning
police have been trained to detect signs of domestic abuse so that they can help the victims
and campaigning from feminists has resulted in the criminal justice system taking domestic
abuse more seriously. 1/12 domestic abuse cases reported end in prosecution.
Criminal or deviant – domestic abuse is a crime as it goes against English and Welsh law so
therefore it is criminal, and it is widely regarded as deviant as it involves the mistreatment
of a partner however a small majority in a study from the CSEW believed that violence was
acceptable in a relationship in extreme circumstances. Therefore, domestic abuse is
criminal and deviant.
Example – Leslie Morgan Steiner was a victim of domestic abuse by her boyfriend at the
time.
LO1 – AC 1.2 – explain the reasons that certain crimes are unreported
Personal reasons
Fear – victim of the crime may feel there will be reprisals or consequences from the
offender if they report the crimes to the police. Victims may fear consequences to their
family and people around them if they report the crimes. As a result of this the victim may
not report these crimes to the police.
Shame – the victim may feel embarrassed or shameful that they are a victim of a crime. The
victim may also not report the crime as they do not want to come to terms with what has
happened to them possibly because how it makes them feel. Because of this the victims
may not report it to the police.
