How far was militarism responsible for the
outbreak of World War I?
To a certain extent, militarism is responsible for the outbreak of World
War One. Militarism is the gathering of weapons to protect/defend your
country. Britain’s main focus was their navy because of their geographical
structure as an island and their army just generally not very good. After
Germany unified in 1870, they swiftly industrialised and Britain began to
feel threatened. At the time, Germany and Britain were in a naval race.
Both countries were trying to improve their navy and ensure they had the
best one. Additionally, the Schlieffen plan was written, which was a
military plan created by the German General Staff’s in the early 20th
century. The end goal was to become victorious on the Western Front,
which consisted of invading France, Russia through Belgium and a full-
blown assault on Russia. Consequently, other countries felt threatened by
the plan and began to militarily prepare for the expected attack. As a
result, tensions are high between the countries and minor events could
trigger a disagreement internationally.
However, alliances may have also been responsible for the first World
War. An alliance is a friendship or business fuelled bond with another
country. Within Europe, there were multiple blocks of the continent that
had certain alliances, these alliances are. On August 1st, Germany
declared war on Russia. However, as Austria and Hungary are allies of
Germany and by the 6th of August had declared war on Russia as well.
Additionally, Russia orders general mobilization of troops because they
are allied to Serbia. Evidently, you can see how a small issue between two
countries has expanded to involve multiple countries and alliances within
Europe. Although alliances didn’t start the war, they increased the number
of countries involved, thus increasing the severity. In order to remain loyal
to their allies, other countries who were not previously involved declared
war on others. Therefore, what was a small disagreement between two
countries began to spread across the globe.
Additionally, imperialism may have been responsible for the outbreak of
World War one. Imperialism is the motion of acquiring land abroad.
Between 1881 and 1914, Europe was experiencing the scramble for
Africa. During this time, there was conflict between different European
countries as to who owned which parts of Africa. Over a prolonged amount
of time, there would have been very high tension between different
countries. One example of how imperialism created increased tension in
Europe was the death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and
Countess Sophie von Chotek. Franz Ferdinand’s father, Emperor Franz
Josef, wanted his son to marry someone who would help Austria in the
imperial field. In order to continue to see each other, Franz Ferdinand got
more involved in the army. When Sophie and Franz Ferdinand eloped,
