Pharmacotherapeutics for Advanced Practice Nursing, NURS 60400, section 001- Online Format
Course Credit Hours: 3
Course description: This course addresses the advanced study of the actions and effects of drugs on the
human system throughout the life cycle. Focus is on pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles,
therapeutic and adverse effects, drug interactions, cost, and evidence based prescribing guidelines.
Considerations related to gender, age, culture and physiologic state are emphasized. The scope of ethical,
legal and professional responsibilities related to pharmacology in advanced nursing practice addressed,
including patient and family education.

Course meeting times, days, and location:
Section 3: This is an online class. Recorded lectures will be available on Blackboard by Wednesday at 9:00
am for every academic week per the calendar. There may be online discussions, quizzes, and exams per
course calendar.

1. Apply the principles of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics relative to human physiology and
pathophysiology.

, 2. Evaluate the indications, contraindications, expected outcomes, adverse effects, and potential drug
interactions for drugs used in treatment of common acute and chronic illnesses.
3. Analyze the risk-benefit ratio of select medications in clinical circumstances.
4. Evaluate the use of medications used to treat individuals with specific conditions based on factors
such as physiologic state, cost, genetic characteristics, age, gender and culture.
5. Develop a personal formulary of medications prescribed for common acute and chronic illnesses.
6. Determine correct dosages, dosage form, routes, and frequency of administration of medications
based on relevant individual patient characteristics.
7. Write prescriptions, using practices that reduce medication errors.

Hardware and software requirements: It is expected that each student will have regular and reliable
access to a computer with a working camera and microphone. Reliable internet access is required.
This does not include sporadic use at the local public library and will not be an acceptable reason
for late assignments, quizzes, or lack of participation. Computer requirements must comply with
those listed in the Lewis University Graduate Student Handbook, including but not limited to up-to-
date applications.
Using LockDown Browser for Online Exams
This course requires the use of LockDown Browser for online exams. Watch this short video to get a
basic understanding of LockDown Browser. The webcam feature will NOT be used
through Respondus Monitor. We will be using Zoom proctoring.

• Ensure you're in a location where you won't be interrupted
• Turn off all mobile devices, phones, etc.
• Clear your desk of all external materials — books, papers, other computers, or devices
• Remain at your desk or workstation for the duration of the test
• LockDown Browser will prevent you from accessing other websites or applications; you will be
unable to exit the test until all questions are completed and submitted
V. Instructional Methods and Activities
Modality of Instruction:
Online
• The format for the course is online for course lectures. Since online students are not able to
participate in in-class discussions, online discussion methods may be utilized to satisfy student
participation requirements. Students must have a reliable computer with a working web cam,
microphone and reliable Internet service.
• Any technical questions can and will need to be directed to the help desk. Blackboard Collaborate
Help Desk: 1-877-382-2293
• There are also Student Tutorials regarding Collaborate that you can view to help enhance your online
experience.
• This is an online format for class lectures. There are no synchronous class meeting dates.
• However, all exams will be conducted with Respondus Lockdown Browser and live Zoom
Proctoring. These dates are fixed and all students must attend, at the time indicated, to participate
in the exam.
• Remember – this is a challenging method of instruction and requires each student to stay current with
the content weekly as it is extremely difficult to be successful in this course if you fall behind.
