Unit 9 LA A : Human Physiology & Reproduction

FUNCTION OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM- “The nervous system is mainly made of the brain,
spinal cord and neurons. But it mainly sends, receives and processes information from all parts of
the body”(Annets, F. et al, 2016). “The brain and the spinal cord are the main organs of the central
nervous system” (Annets, F. et al, 2016). “The peripheral nervous system has motor neurons that carry
information from the CNS to the organs, glands, muscles and also has sensory neurons that
transmit electrical impulses to the CNS from the organs or the external stimuli” (Annets, F. et al, 2016).
“The nervous system can be divided into two parts: the autonomic nervous system” (Annets, F. et al,
2016) and the somatic neuron system. P1

Structure and function of sensory & motor neurons and their environment in
cardiovascular & ventricular system-
Motor “neurons carry electrical impulses from the central nervous system to the effector organs,
which can be the muscles, glands, etc and sensory neurons carry electrical impulses from the
sensory receptors to the central nervous system” (Marina Aunapuu, 2021). Both of these cells contain the
cell body which contains the cell nucleus as well as other organelles, dendrites which are
extensions that conduct impulses to the cell body and links with neighbouring neurons, axon
which is a process that extends from the cell body to connect with muscles or glands and myelin
sheath, a material that prevents loss of impulses and enables rapid transportation of the electrical
impulse. Motor neurons have the node of Ranvier and axon hillock that sensory neurons do not
have. Sensory neurons have the sensory receptor and synaptic knobs that the motor neuron
does not have. P1

Figure- 05
Figure 04 shows the basic pathways of the nervous system.

“The autonomic system is the branch of the peripheral nervous system that regulates involuntarily
the functions of the internal organs like heartbeats and breathing and controls the smooth and
cardiac muscles, as well as glands.” (Waxenbaum, Reddy and Varacallo, 2021)

Control of ventilation-
The respiratory control centre is created by neurons found in the pons and medulla. These
neurons activate the main respiratory muscles, which are the intercostal and diaphragm muscles
and relay electrical signals to the primary respiratory muscles through the phrenic and intercostal
