HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL

, University of the People –MBA COMPLETE GUIDE

This is a very big manual and can be quite overwhelming to get to the desired assignment. The

actual A+ samples are bold and highlighted in yellow e.g., BUS 5115 Discussion Assignment

Unit 1 – Sample 1. If you are in a hurry and have no interest in the Learning Guides, look out for

these headings. Assignments are in chronological order from Unit 1 to Unit 8 in the order of

Discussion Assignment, Written Assignment, and Portfolio Activity. The Group Activity is at

the very end. Links are also being worked on at the moment but for now it is better to search for

the desired assignment manually. If you are using Microsoft Word, use the search or find (in

order versions) function. Input the desired assignments in this format “BUS 5115 Discussion

Assignment Unit 1”. A navigation bar opens on the left and you’ll see all the 5 alternative

assignments – just click on the desired one. Adobe reader also has a similar search method

“Find”; it will display results similarly.

Enjoy!

Introduction

, University of the People –MBA COMPLETE GUIDE

Welcome to Business Ethics. This unit provides an introduction to ethics in general and

as it relates to the business world. You will be introduced to some of the fundamental concepts

of ethics, such as conflicts of interest and the rule of law, particularly as it relates to creating an

environment in which business operates effectively and efficiently. You will also explore how

issues of sustainability are deeply intertwined with, and impacted by, decisions made in all

aspects of the business world. By the end of this unit, you will understand how a thorough

knowledge of ethics is crucial to becoming a successful businessperson.

Daily news headlines highlight ethical scandals and dilemmas in business. Globalization

and technological advances have increased the complexity and importance of ethical

considerations in business environments. Business activities also have had significant

implications on the health of our planet. An understanding of business ethics has thus become a

crucial requirement for organizational leaders and entrepreneurs.

This course is designed to help students improve their abilities by providing a framework

to identify, analyze, and resolve ethical issues in business contexts. Business strategies are

shaped by individual, business, and social responsibilities as they affect decision making.

Conflicts between organizational goals and personal values, long versus short term goals,

relationships with various stakeholders, corporate governance, support for sustainability-related

decision making and initiatives, and legal parameters all contribute to the ethical culture of a

firm. Thus, the specific facts or laws of what we study are only a tool in considering how the

underlying, general principles may be applied to unique cases that will arise later in your

professional career.

Ethics in Sustainability

Sustainability is a modern concept that promotes thinking around ways of living in

harmony with the natural world, while simultaneously and actively working to protect and

preserve it from irreversible damage. It seeks to balance the advancement of human well-being

with the conservation of our natural environment. The sustainability drive has led humanity to

the era of sustainable development, which relates to the need to address environmental and social

problems while we develop technologically and economically.

The university, as a learning institution, is no exception in this journey. As you go

embark through your educational journey at UoPeople, you will come across courses that have a

focus on sustainability. Our hope is to provide you with the foundational knowledge to help you

become more sustainably conscious within your future job and life in general.

While you are reading the content, reflect on the following question.

 Thinking back on your own professional experiences and practice, how actively have

sustainability concerns been addressed and incorporated into the day to day work of your

organizational decision making?

 Review the Sustainability Module in the Learning Resource Center (LRC). Complete the

module and earn the badge to gain background on sustainability as it is a major theme

throughout this course.

, University of the People –MBA COMPLETE GUIDE

 Learn more about sustainability by reading the Dictionary of Sustainable Management,

consider what additional terms might be valuable. Submit your suggestions for possible

inclusion in the online glossary.

 Read Ethics Defined: Sustainability, then watch the video to learn about the role ethics

plays in sustainable behavior.

Ethical Behavior

Ethics are a set of standards that govern the conduct of a person, especially a member of

a profession. While ethical beliefs are held by individuals, they can also be reflected in the

values, practices, and policies that shape the choices made by decision makers on behalf of their

organizations. Professions and organizations regularly establish a “Code of Ethics” that serves to

guide the behavior of members of the profession or organization. In the medical profession, for

instance, doctors take an ethical oath to “do no harm.” The American Society of Mechanical

Engineers’ code states, “Engineers shall hold paramount the safety, health, and welfare of the

public in the performance of their professional duties.”

Governments use laws and regulations to point business behavior in what they perceive

to be beneficial directions. Business ethics implicitly regulates behavior that lies beyond

governmental control. Business ethics refers to contemporary standards or sets of values that

govern the actions and behavior of individuals in the business organization and the actions of the

business itself. It applies to all aspects of business conduct and is relevant to the conduct of

individuals and entire organizations. Corporations and professional organizations, particularly

licensing boards, will usually have a written “Code of Ethics” that governs standards of

professional conduct expected of all in the field.

, University of the People –MBA COMPLETE GUIDE

While you are reading the content for the lesson this week, reflect on the following

questions.

 Is "ethically sound behavior" defined and/or constrained by time?

 How might perspectives vary as time and information change?

 For example, how have issues associated with sustainability awareness and initiatives

impacted ethical discussions within the workplace?

Learn more about the components of business ethics by reading and taking notes

on Chapter 1- What is Business Ethics.

Read A Framework for Ethical Decision Making and Managing for Organizational Integrity to

learn ways to implement and apply ethics to a business.
