Problem StatementCarter’s Barbershop is located in Greendale, Westmoreland. Mr Donald Carter has 3 years of
experience as the owner and operator of Carter’s Barbershop. It is often seen as an election
campaign due to the number of persons seen at the shop during any given day in week. It is
the only barbershop in the area and lacks improvement as it relates to technology. The
business offers barber services such as such as cutting, trimming, shampooing, and styling
hair, trimming beards, or giving shaves.
The manual method of keeping records has been used since the shop’s operation in January
2015. The manual system keeps records of finances on a day to day basis. The customers are
given a number as soon as they enter the barbershop to keep track of how far they are from
getting through.Every trim/ shave is recorded in a log book. This is often time consuming.
Redundancy and inconsistency in data entry may occur.
Donald Carter operates multiple businesses in the area. With the barbershop been the less
advanced in the area, over the years the business is been affected. It is affecting the business
because more physical storage space is needed to store books of information. Customers
often complain about the ticketing system and the length of time they have to wait.There is
also a lack of security, meaning no back up and safety in case of a fire or theft.
, Analysis of Problem
In order for the researcher to analyse the problem Carter’s Barbershop faces, a series of fact
finding techniques will be used to find out suitable solutions for the problem. The fact finding
techniques that will be used,includes an observation of the employees working ethics and the
customers’ behavioural ethics. Questionnaires will also be issued to frequent barbershop
members since they are the main ones being affected by the ticket system therefore they
would be the best candidate to give the questions. In addition to that, the revision of records
will be employed for approximately four (4) days. These fact finding techniques will be used
to obtain the solution to the problem the barber shop has.
According to the Webster’s Dictionary, a questionnaire may be defined as a set of printed or
written questions with a choice of answers, devised for the purposes of a survey or statistical
study.The questionnaire was used due to its numerous advantages. These include;
respondents have time to think about their answers also they are simple and quick for
respondents to complete.A questionnaire containing fifteen (15) questions; containing ten
(10) close ending questions and five (5) open ended questions will be used.
(DeWalt) 2011 states that an observation is a form of scrutinizing. It is the action or process
of closely observing or monitoring something or someone.The overt form of observation will
be used. This is declaring to the participants what they are doing and gaining permission.
Carter’s Barbershop has a total of three (3) employees, two barbers and 1 barber stylist.
During two weeks of viewing the barbers do their job and how customers react to the
ticketing system, it was observed that the ‘regulars’ at the barbershop were rather annoyed by
the ticketing system and it often causes conflicts between customers.
