How Satisfied were the Big Three at the Treaty of Versailles and was the Treaty fair?
Woodrow (USA)

- Least satisfied
 Germany being punished for aggression – it set a good precedent for the future
 Creation of the League of Nations
 Self-determination in practise – Poland, Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia
 Germany being punished for aggression is set a good precedent for the future
- Limitations
 He believed everyone being together but due to Clemenceau ideas, that wasn’t able to happen
 Thought the punishment was too harsh, the American public didn’t agree with the Treaty, so he lost
presidency with the next elections in 1921
 Self determination not applied to west Prussia and Posen (Polish corridor)
 Freedom of the seas - knew Germany would feel unable to protect waters
 Didn’t agree with colonies but couldn’t do anything – so now countries are still under colonies

Clemenceau (France)

- Satisfied
 He wanted Germany to be found guilt for everything – war guilt clause
 Germany weakened economically by reparations made France agree with the Treaty
 Germany weekend military by demilitarisation of Rhineland
 Limitations on army and disbanding the air force – this reduced an attack on France
 Territory loses made France happy as they got their land returned
 Also, France was happy because Germany was not at the Treaty of Versailles
- Limitations
 Reparations in 1919 were undecided
 Germany still had an army
 Saarland and Upper Silesia left to plebiscite
 Germany was not broken up into smaller states

Lloyd George (UK)

- Partially satisfied
 Germany found guilty – they appeased the British public
 Germany navy reduced to 6 battle ships secured Britain supremacy at sea as their biggest threat was
left with 6 battle ships
 Germany had to pay Britain reparations for damages
 Former German colonies such as Cameroon were protectorates of the League of Nations which meant
Britain and France effectively ran them
- Limitations
 Excessive reparations meant that long term trading
 Was not secure with Germany – proved right with eco collapse in 1923 as Germany was Britain’s 2 nd
biggest trader
 Concerned that the punishment was too harsh and was worried Germany would take revenge – Hitler
did take revenge to have revenge on the treaty of Versailles – exactly what he was worried about
happened
