Leisure Time- Relaxing
This can be defined as time to relax and unwind. Athletes are advised to rest and relax as this allows
athletes to unwind. It allows the body time to reco and offers a break from the mental pressures of
training and competition. Emerging athletes have to combine sport with job to fund future financial
security which can impact on leisure time. Relaxation can be active, like cycling or non-active such as
watching TV or listening to music. Either way it is important that an athlete finds time to relax and
'switch-off'. This gives the mind and body time to relax, helping them to be prepared and focused
when competing or training. A hectic lifestyle combines; training, competitions and travel.
Therefore, there will be limited time available to switch off from the rigours of their sport.

An example of an athlete that uses relaxation techniques is Michael Phelps. Michael Phelps, the
competitive swimmer, is the most decorated Olympian of all time. This talented swimmer,
nicknamed “Flying Fish”, is the best in visualization, according to his coach. He started practising
relaxation from a young age. As a child, Phelps struggled with his focus and managing his energy. At
age of 11, he started training swimming, under coach Bob Bowman wings at the North Baltimore
Aquatic Club. Right away Bowman recognised in young swimmers his talent , that he is strong-willed,
and wants to become champion. His coach gave Micheal’s mum a relaxation book and ask her to

, read it to him before going to bed. He would focus on clenching and releasing the muscles, starting
on feet and finishing on the head. Michael remembers that he either fell asleep or cleared his mind
and started practising visualization. Once his mind was calm and relaxed, he would visualize his
perfect race or the one when something went wrong. The competitive swimmer will prepare himself
for every possible scenario:

‘’If my suit ripped or if my goggles broke, you know, what would I do ?” Phelps explains.

Coach Bob compares visualization to ‘watching a movie”, you first watch yourself from the side and
then you see yourself as a swimmer in the water. Your brain processes different outcomes and
creates a database, so if something unexpected happens you would choose one of the scenarios you
have practised earlier. This gives Michael confidence, as picturing those scenarios prepares him for
any eventuality and allows him to focus on swimming. Bowman said that, “he has all of this in his
database so that when he swims the race he is already programmed his nervous system to do one of
those”. In the video prepared by Washington Post, swim coach said that he saw Michel being beat
but he never saw him choke, as he is ready for every result. Bowman further explains that for
visualization being successful it has to be: Realistic/ true to life and practised many times before
performance. Michael before high-stake competitions visualizes the race almost 100 times, which he
is preparing for, so his body and mind knows what to do. The brain is tricked and in the race day, it is
hard to differentiate if this reality or image created in his head before.

Leisure Time- Alcohol and Drugs
Alcohol is often used as a social tool and in sport, often used to celebrate victory. Manufacturers of
alcohol often use sport as a marketing tool through sponsorship. Unfortunately, drinking to excess
presents both short and long-term problems. It can lead to unruly and inappropriate behaviours,
with crimes sometimes being committed when drunk. In the long-term, excessive alcohol
consumption results in liver damage and ultimately death. Drugs can be divided into two main
categories: recreational drugs and performance-enhancing drugs. Common recreational drugs such
as marijuana, cocaine or heroin are dangerous and can have serious consequences for an athlete.
These consequences include: Performance affected in the short-term, damage to health is
considerable in the long-term, banned from their sport and police prosecution.

An example of an athlete who drank too much alcohol in their career is George Best. This is an article
that talks about his addiction, ‘Maybe it's the footie or maybe it's the weather, regardless of the
reason, the American perception is that our neighbours across the pond basically live in pubs and
there are pubs everywhere. In the sad case of George Best this notion extends to athletes as well.
