Assignment C - Part 1
An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced
✓ Use the checklist from unit 10 ('Evaluating course book material') to write a general evaluation
of the book.
✓ You won't be able to comment on all items as you only have one unit and the contents, but say
as much as you can.
✓ This must be presented as a coherent essay, not just a list.
✓ Then say whether you personally would like to use the book with an advanced class and why or
why not - this is just your opinion, so there is not a right or a wrong response to this part.
✓ You do not need to refer to the class described for Part 2 of this assignment.
✓ Write 300 - 500 words.
The material for An Evaluation of Cutting Edge Advanced is well presented and formulated. The
vocabulary, language use, student tasks, activities and themes are rational and suitable for
advanced-level students. The sample unit's vocabulary and activities grow in complexity and
difficulty at a pace that students at an advanced level should be able to understand and keep up
with.
The sample unit offers students a variety of activities to do, most of which are aimed at pair and
group work that promotes communication between peers. The materials were designed to be
used in a classroom environment making it difficult for students to follow the material
independently. The materials in the chapter are well presented, but it appears cluttered with far
too much information on one page, which may cause some students to find it difficult and
unappealing to read. There is plenty of practice in this coursebook, as well as recycling and revision
that are well executed, frequently referring to and making use of previous activity
answers/findings to help complete a new activity further on, assisting learners to recycle, revise
and reinforce their understanding under an appropriate unit theme. The scope and sequence
reflect the task-based, interactive approach to learning.
There are no tests, only practice pages that follow the scope and sequence, grammatical reference
pages or vocabulary lists are included.
