The decision-making route from an ethical dilemma to an ethical or unethical outcome is
directly influenced by the individual’s moderators, his/her cognitive stage of moral
development, as well as the situational moderators. It is therefore obvious that ethical
decision-making in the work context is dependent both on who the individual is and by
the occupational influences that operate on that individual.


Individuals in the same work context who are at different stages of moral development
will thus reach a different decision, even though they are faced with the same ethical
dilemma. Similarly, the different individual moderators of two individuals, such as ego
strength, field dependence and locus of control, exert different influences on the
decision-making process.
