Geography Class Notes Containing the following:
Glaciation, Glaciers, Weathering, Erosion, How Glaciers are made, How Glaciers move, Types of Glaciers, Features Caused by glaciers
Weathering:the destruction process of things by natural processes, without being moved
Erosion: the destruction process of thing by natural forces, and being moved
How glaciers are made:
● “Glaciation” occurs when snow freezes
● Glaciers are created when more snow falls in the winter than can be melted during the
following summer
● As snow builds up, the glacier becomes heavy and turns the bottom layers into ice
● Once the glacier is heavy enough, gravity pulls it downwards or outwards
● This causes rock underneath the glacier to be broken(weathering) and carried away with
melt water(erosion)
How does it move?
● Moves like a balloon being squished
● Less new snow, more melt=smaller footprint
● More new snow, less melt= bigger footprint
● In glacier crevasses there’s melt water that digs down to the core bedrock
Types of glaciers:
Alpine:
● A glacier in a mountain region
● Moves because of gravity
● Only a few centimeters per day
Continental glacier:
● Exists on flat land
● Moves because of weight
Features cause by glaciers:
● U shaped valley:
● As glaciers move down valleys, they scrape away the valley
walls and make them smooth and u-shaped.
● Till:
● It is material that is picked up, carried and dropped by a glacier.
● Includes fine particles (sand) to huge particles (boulder).
● Moraine:
● Are ridges(piles) of till.
● Left by the front or side of a glacier as it retreats
● Spillway:
● As glaciers melt, huge amount of water must flow away
