The year is 2050, and one simple mention of the word "coronavirus" still overwhelms me withgrief. The memories I try so hard to lock away and forget are hanging by a thread on a delicate
trigger. A surgical mask, or anything indirectly related to the pandemic floods my head with
vividly tragic recounts that take more than a lifetime to get past.
What happened during the pandemic you might ask? Many things ; lockdowns and quarantines,
healthcare workers racing against the clock, scrambles for basic necessities, just to name a few.
News reports starting from Wuhan, China, on the rising death rates that never seemed to be
improving, and worldwide research for vaccines were desperately conducted. Slowly but surely,
every country started reporting cases of infection, and concern was inevitable as panic was
bound to spread. Every patient, family unit, doctor or nurse has their own point of view and story
to tell about this pandemic, and here's mine…
Back in 2020, when I was just a freshman in a prestigious university in Singapore, the pandemic
started hitting their shores. The rest of my family back in Japan had warned me about the virus
that had hit them hard, but I did not expect to be affected by it this soon. I was already struggling
to pay my tuition fees and to get by. I got a part time job and sooner or later, I was financially
stable and coping well. I was like any normal citizen then, optimistic and hopeful that in the near
future the pandemic would end, going back to our normal way of life, especially with how well
Singapore was handling the pandemic.
Fast forwarding a year of safely distancing measures and precautions, I was so certain that we
were near the end, and that we could finally go back to our daily norms ; that was, until I
received a call from my aunt. Japan had just been hit by their 4th wave of the virus, and most of
my relatives were infected. The reality of the pandemic occurred to me. Singapore may be fine,
but as long as the virus still exists, everyone is still in danger. I fell to the floor as my heart sank,
painfully sobbing with my head buried in my hands. My only prayer was that they would get
better, no matter the cost. I gathered all my resources and transferred them to my family, hoping
that they would be helpful in any way to pay their costly hospital bills, while I skimped and saved
on anything that I could. I knew how expensive the treatment was, and I knew their current
savings were barely sufficient. I started skipping my meals to make up for my depleting bank
account and my face was losing its colour visibly, as my body seemed to grow to become more
gaunt. It didn't matter anyway, and I was too distressed and exhausted to care.
