Unit 8 Resub - Creativity and activity for children and young people

P1, P2, P3, M1, D1

Title- The importance of creativity

,Unit 8

Introduction

Creative experiences enable us to develop, by increasing our physical and perceptual skills. Being
creative allows us to explore our world and our feelings. Creativity enables children and young people to
develop problem solving and many other valuable skills. Learning and play are linked, and creativity
triggers children’s imaginations. This assignment will explain why creativity is beneficial for children,
young people and society. It will include examples to describe how a child could play creatively. I will
also be explaining what children need in order to develop their creativity. I will be analysing the
importance of using developmental stages and the link between creativity and learning. Finally, I will be
evaluating how theory of play underpins the promotion and importance of creativity.

, Unit 8

P1- Explain the importance of creativity for children and young people

I am now going to explain the importance of creativity for children and young people. Creative learning
is characterised by using activity to learn new things. Children often learn new things through being
creative. As the child gets older, creativity will also involve more deeper thinking, they will begin to
question why things happen the way they do when playing and being creative. Creativity is important to
children as it allows them to develop physical skills, therefore, this enables them to develop their fine
and gross motor skills. This is why a range of creative activities are important, because otherwise they
would only be developing certain skills and would lack skills in other areas of development. Children are
also able to develop the ability to become aware of things around them, mostly due to their senses. This
is known as perceptual skills. Children are able to explore values, such as equality and diversity. Children
can get an understanding of equality and diversity through creativity, as they can learn that other
children are just as equal as them even if they are different in ways. Through play and creativity children
are able to learn about their own and other’s cultures. Making Chinese food with the children to try
during Chinese New Year, is a way to make them more aware of other cultures through creativity. “Big C
creativity is a process linked to new ideas, sudden understandings and creative excellence.” (Ferreiro
Peteiro et al., 2016) Big C creativity requires confidence and self-esteem. During this type of creativity
suggestions are made to a whole group of children. They use their initiative and conviction during this
type of creativity. This means they develop independence, have meaning and are able to have new
ideas, as they are developing ideas from other children’s suggestions. Little C creativity involves every
day problem solving, this helps to develop resourcefulness. During Little C creativity children work in a
sequence to achieve the end goal. Creativity means to use activity to learn new things. It involves being
imaginative and developing imagination through creativity. Creativity is important for children and
young people as it allows them to develop their problem-solving abilities. By being creative a child might
encounter a challenge that they need to overcome, this then helps them develop problem solving
abilities and resilience. Creativity helps to express feelings and thoughts. Often children will express how
they feel through play. For example, colouring can show how a child feels, for example reds and blues
can show sadness. Creativity is importance for children and young people as it allows them to develop
their potential as they are able to discover talents, and develop new skills or old skills further. The
benefits of creativity are that it improves capacity for thought, action and communication. Creativity
also enables children to develop confidence. It enables children to trust themselves when creating
something and allows them to build confidence in themselves. Also, some children may be afraid of
getting things wrong but with creativity there is no right or wrong way of being creative, so this helps
children gain confidence in themselves and their abilities. Creativity helps promote both physical and
emotional development. They may be using either fine motor skills, gross motor skills or both. For
example, a child who is shy may be more comfortable carrying out activities on their own to begin with,
as they may need time to develop their confidence. Creativity is important to individuals has it allows
them to develop both their physical and perceptual skills, once they have developed these skills, they
then have the chance to extend them skills. Children are able to improve their capacity for thought,
action and communication through developing their creative skills. Through creativity children are able
to nurture their feelings and sensibilities themselves. There are also benefits to society if children are
creative. It allows children to learn how to deal with unexpected situations and transfer knowledge to
different situations, this means they are more likely to be able to handle unexpected situations.
Creativity allows children to bring together previously unconnected information and this can help to
transfer valuable skills from one area of knowledge to another. Children are also able to use information
