El nervio craneal I, o nervio olfatorio,
sólo contiene fibras sensoriales
especiales responsables del sentido del
olfato.
Estas fibras transmiten los
impulsos olfatorios en esta
dirección:
EPITELIO OLFATORIO (en
cavidad nasal) → CEREBRO
Que es donde se perciben como
sentido del olfato.
El epitelio olfativo se encuentra A CADA LADO del techo de la cavidad nasal,
donde la mucosa nasal contiene neuronas receptoras olfativas (debajo de la lámina
cribosa).
, Las neuronas receptoras olfativas son neuronas bipolares que tienen cada una
dendrita en su superficie apical que da lugar a muchos cilios olfatorios, que poseen
receptores para las moléculas odorantes.
Las superficies basales de estas neuronas dan lugar a procesos centrales (o axones)
que se reúnen en haces para formar aproximadamente 20 nervios olfatorios en cada
lado, que, en conjunto, llamamos nervios olfatorios derecho e izquierdo.
Las fibras pasan a través de pequeños agujeros en la lámina cribosa del hueso
etmoides y entran en el bulbo olfatorio localizado en la fosa craneal anterior.
Aquí, las fibras del nervio olfatorio hacen sinapsis en las neuronas de segundo
orden, llamadas células mitrales.
