Stearic acid is a type of fatty acid that is found it is a wax-like material that might be
white or colourless and has an unpleasant odour. It can be dissolved in oil, but
because it is waxy, it is difficult to dissolve in water. Because it is only partially
soluble in water, it will float on top of the water if mixed with it.
Stearic acid has an 18-carbon chain and is also known as Octadecanoic acid; it is
classified as a long-chain fatty acid in chemistry. Stear is a Greek word that refers to
the fats that are created as a by-product of the processing of meats.
Stearic acid is used to make emulsifiers, lubricants, ointments, lotions, and
emollients, among other things. Stearic acid effectively stabilises, thickens, and
softens the moisturiser or ointment, assisting in the creation of a cooling sensation
when applied to the skin.
Lubricants with stearic acid have a smooth, pearl-like finish. Soaps, Shaving Creams
and Detergents, Lotions, Moisturizers, and Face Creams, candles, rubber, Paints &
Coatings, plastic, butteries, and fireworks are all possible applications.
