Gender Bias

- The di erences between males and females raise important questions because
certain behaviours may not be universal.

- Di erences may lead to bias.
- Gender bias = distorted view of what behaviours may be typical for men and
women.

- This bias may lead to di erential treatment of Males and Females, based on
stereotypes and not real di erences.

- Androcentrism = a male lens on society
• Psychology has been distorted by looking at it from a androcentric perspective.
• Almost all psychologists were/are men and so the theories they tend to
produce represent a male world-view.

- Two ways psychology may be biased: alpha or beta bias
• Alpha bias:
- Exaggerating the di erences between men and women.
- Theories assume there’s real and enduring di erences between men and
women

• Beta bias:
- Exaggerating the similarity between men and women.
- They minimise gender di erences.
- Assumes all people are the same and so it’s reasonable to apply theories/
research to both men and women.
- Often happens when ndings obtained from men are applied to women
without additional validation.
- Example of alpha bias - Freud:
• Freud viewed femininity as failed masculinity - he exaggerated the di erence
between men and women.
