Running head: ASPIRATIONAL FASCISM AND AMERICAN DEMOCRACY 1

, ASPIRATIONAL FASCISM AND AMERICAN DEMOCRACY 2

The democracy of the American people has been in trial for some time now. Ever since

taking over as America’s President, concerns have emerged over the manner in which President

Trump consolidates governance and structures of governance. A closer comparison of the new

America under President Trump and the historical times of Benito Mussolini or Adolf Hitler

reveal very slim differences, and the former appears comfortable with the style of administration,

which many critics have opposed as fascist, authoritarian and non-democratic. Aspirational

fascism has affected America’s democracy by adversely impacting the socio-cultural, economic

and political welfare of the people.

Aspirational Fascism has compromised the socio-political democracy of the people by

promoting white nationalism. There have been widespread cases of white nationalism in the post

Barrack Obama era. A report by the Anti-Defamation League states that at least 6,768 people

were subjected to incidents of extremism and anti-Semitism between 2018 and 2019, significant

figures suggesting that the democracy of many Americans is at stake (Acemoglu, 2020). Mostly,

President Trump has been blamed for the uprising cases of domestic extremism. Following a

series of incidences where President Trump’s followers have exercised extremism to various

degrees, opponents of the Trump administration blame the violence and aggression to his

supremacist style of leadership. During his campaigns in 2015, an incident in Charlottesville,

Virginia, where James Alex Fields Jr drove into anti-Trump protestors and injured many citizens

further prove that there is no immunity for Americans against authoritarianism present in other

parts of the world. Yet, President Trump seemingly supported the white supremacist, by

infamously quoting that there were “some very fine people on both sides.” (Acemoglu, 2020).
