As activities of daily living become overwhelming, persistent states of worry, fear, and
anxiety can consume a person’s thought process and impair their ability to function and cope
with the demands of life. Generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) affects almost 7 million adults in
the United States (Smith & Segal, 2016). This occasionally debilitating nervous system disorder
can begin at any time in the life cycle. Its onset can be suddenly or a gradual development that’s
been building since childhood. The purpose of this paper is to provide a case study review of a
patient demonstrating this nervous system disorder. A treatment plan of care was developed,
medications prescribed, patient education provided, and a discussion at the follow-up
appointment evaluated the effectiveness of the plan.
The case review to establish a plan of treatment is for Marsha Lansing, a 30 year old
female, presenting with complaints of having headaches on a daily basis along with feelings of
irritability, tiredness, and sadness. She states she lives a very stressful life and finds herself
worrying constantly about work, home, finances, family, and pets. She is anxious and fidgeting
during the physical exam. Physical assessment findings are within normal limits. Laboratory
results include: 1) TSH: 2.6 U/mL, 2) Calcium: 9 mg/dL, 3) Hgb: 13 mg/dL, and 4) Glucose: 86
mg/dL. In a brief review, she denies any significant medical history of illness or surgeries. She
works full-time, along with her spouse, and has 3 small children.
The initial visit assessment concluded a diagnosis of GAD indicating a presence of actual
anxiety induced depression as well. Treatment options reviewed and discussed with Ms. Lansing
included 1) lifestyle changes or modifications, 2) cognitive-behavioral therapy, 3) alternative
therapies, and 4) prescription medication regimen. Ms. Lansing was receptive to the proposed
treatment plan of care and was agreeable to comply with the recommendations.
