Overview
, Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States in 2009, which accounted for
approximately 40,000 deaths (O’Conner, E., Gaynes, B., Burds, B., Soh, C., & Whitlock, E., 2013). One
area in particular that needs attention, is that of the adolescent age suicides. We need to be able to
screen for depression and suicide within the adolescents every-day environment. This could be done in
not only the primary medical providers’ office, but also in the schools. This would ensure that a rapid
response to the issues at hand. One of the biggest issues it determining what is the best questions to ask
that would screen a teenager for possible depression and suicidal ideation. Suicide is an epidemic among
our youth, we need to develop a screening or implement a prior screening. At the end of this paper, you
will be given ideas and concepts of which have been completed and evaluated to aid in the adoption of
the screen widespread.
Specialty Track
Family Nurse Practitioner (NP) are registered nurses who have an advanced training to provide
many of the same services performed by physicians (Britt, D. 2012). NPs care for a wide range in age of
patients, from babies to geriatric patients. NPs engage patient in their care by helping them understand
their illness, how to care and improve the illness. They are able to screen for suicide risk in adolescents,
in hopes to help prevent suicide ideation. They would be able to not just screen, but help with the
possible medications or referring to a psychologist in a timely manner. It is only a matter of what
questions would best be used to screen the adolescents at risk.
