Over the years, industrialization and economic development have been the core agenda of

many countries, influencing individual wealth and overall profitability. Despite the successful

accomplishments in the early years, many countries ended up exploiting certain vices that

undermined human rights (Unger & West, 1999). These countries, however, exploited children

and over-worked their citizens under horrible conditions while enriching the middle-class people.

This awful practice prompted the emergence of the Progressives who were devoted to fighting

for the rights of these people.

In April 1912, President Theodore Roosevelt identified with the progressives in his

speech “Who is a progressive?” Roosevelt (1912) describes a progressive as a person interested

in the change and progress of human life. The individual characteristics of a progressive are

based on new imagination that opens opportunities. Progressives are also filled with sympathy

and passionate feelings in support of forward movement, are aware of public opinion, and they

as well believe in one’s ability to make good choices that promote environmental and industrial

growth. Their goal is to uplift and support the betterment of humankind.

In the speech, Roosevelt further explains that simple acts of kindness, honesty, and fair

treatment are indications of a country’s prosperity. According to his understanding, every human

being at some point has been a progressive. The simple acts of standing against any form of

social injustice, fearlessly fighting against any special privileges, and advocating for the laborer’s

rights are progressive acts. Also, Roosevelt felt that many had already participated in securing

good living conditions for the poor, making sensible decisions for the good of the people, helping

a young girl or boy to get a proper education, or even fighting for women’s rights is an

contribution to the betterment for human life.
