Fiela se kind – Die drama
deur Dalene Matthee
School edition
FIRST ACT (EERSTE BEDRYF)
Scene 1 (Toneel 1)
Forest scene (woudtoneel). Elias is busy (besig) climbing down the primitive
scaffolding (steier). There is a lot of fog (mis).
Elias thinks to himself that a man only (net) has one body (lyf) and that he has
to live with that body for a long time. He believes (glo) he has a good plan
and a little luck (geluk), although luck is hard to come by (skaars) in the forest
(bos). He calls out to his wife, Barta, to bring him some coffee, saying he is
exhausted (gedaan). He thinks how he will need to get a few (paar) old
metal sheets (sinkplate) to patch up their house since the kids are suffering
(ly) due to it being so damp (nattigheid) inside.
When he hears Barta coming with his coffee, he quickly grabs (gryp) his axe
(handbyl) and looks attentively (aandagtig) at the handle (steel).
(This shows the audience that he does not want his wife to catch him doing
nothing: he wants to appear being busy and working hard.)
Barta asks Elias if Lukas, their son, is not with him, but Elias replies no and tells
her to put the coffee down since his hands are busy. Bartha leaves and Elias
thinks that she is still (nog) a pretty lady, but she will have to get new shoes

,(skoene). He considers (oorweeg) getting Krisjan Smal from Lelievleibos’s
oldest son to help him with the beams (balke) in order for Elias to deliver
(lewer) more wood, but then he will have to deal with (sonde en ergernis)
accommodation (blyplek) for the boy. Elias believes the only way a man can
get a proper (behoorlik) extra income in the Bos, is to get a gun (geweer)
and shoot (skiet) elephants (olifante) for their tusks (tande), but then he has to
take into consideration getting money to buy bullets (koeëls) and he has to
first get past (verbykom) the wood buyers (houtkopers) and reach the ships
(skippe), where one can sell (verkwansel) the ivory since they pay (betaal)
the best, but according to (volgens) the wood buyers (houtkopers), they are
the only ones with a license (liksens/lisensie) to sell to the ships.
Willem walks on stage and relays the message from his mother that Lukas is
not in the house. Elias tells him to find out from tant Malie if Lukas isn’t there
and commands (beveel) Willem to wipe (vee af) his nose. Willem returns to
report that Lukas is also not at tant Malie and Elias loses his temper (verloor sy
humeur) when he asks Willem if he has gone to tant Anna yet, which his son
has not done. Elias is annoyed (geïrriteerd) because he feels it’s a struggle
(sukkel) raising kids until (tot) they are old enough (groot genoeg) to help out
and he still has a long way to go with his children. Willem is only six (ses), Lukas
is three (drie) and Nina is still a baby (nog aan die tiet).
Barta approaches Elias again, double checking (maak weer seker) that Lukas
has not been there and tells Elias then that Lukas is also not with Sofie.
Sofie, tant Gertjie and tant Malie appear on stage and last mentioned
(laasgenoemde) says that the same thing (dieselfde ding) happened
(oorgekom/gebeur) to her deceased (oorle) aunt in Karatara’s forest (bos),
where she thought her child went to chop (kap) firewood (vuurhout) with the
others (ander) and she only realized (agtergekom) that afternoon (middag)
that he was missing (weg). They found his frozen (verkluimde) body
(liggaampie) a week later.
This upsets (ontstel) Bartha to the point where she puts her fist (vuis) in her
mouth and bites (byt) down on her knuckles (kneukels).
Elias says Lukas is not missing and commands them to check their houses
again. When the three women leave the stage, Elias scolds Barta, saying he
can’t understand (verstaan) how she could let the boy just disappear from
her sight (onder haar oë uit) and she replies that she was struggling (sukkel)

,with the fire (vuur), but then again in the next breath, Elias says that Lukas is
not missing.
Tant Gertjie appears on stage again, telling Elias that Anna has to go call
(roep) the men to help look for the child before it gets too late. Elias insists
that Lukas is not missing, but tant Gertjie also does not back down, saying
that a child is like a tortoise (skilpad): one thinks that the tortoise is slow
(stadig) and the next moment, he is gone.
Elias then wants to go call the men himself, but tant Gertjie tells him to stay
since Barta will be needing him. Anna knows the footpaths (voetpaaie) and
she knows what to do when she encounters the grootvoete aka elephants,
along (langs) the way.
The audience hears everyone calling for Lukas. Lights go on inside (binne-in)
the house. There are lots of people coming in and standing around, eating
and drinking something.
Willem says that he saw Lukassie last by the corner (hoek) of the house when
Barta gave him a sweet potato (patat). Elias asks Kristoffel when he saw Lukas
and the boy answers that Lukas was in the house playing (speel) with rocks
(klippe).
Elias wonders why he has not been able to find a trace or to track Lukas
(spoor) and tant Malie replies that there are a lot of children on the island
(eiland) with their tracks (spore) of their own. Tant Malie wonders out loud
about the time (slag) that Flip Lourens went missing (weggeraak), how it was
also in such (sulke) thick (dik) fog (mis) and how they still (nou nog) have not
found him. Elias answers that Flip did not go missing, that the grootvoete aka
elephants trampled (getrap) him. Tant Malie replies that the grootvoete have
been roaming (gebreek en gevreet) in the area all week and that they
would not even (nie eers) feel when they step (trap) on a small child, but Elias
says that elephants do not trample children.
Martiens arrives with a few other men and says he will start searching (soek)
to the south (suid) while Dawid must go west, Koos must search north (noord)
and Elias must go east (oos). They must call out every hundred (hondred) feet
(tree) and on the tenth (tiende), they must turn around (draai om) and swing
the directions (rigting) about fifty (vyftig) feet (tree). Tant Malie hands them
the lanterns.

, Tant Gertjie asks about the elephants, but Dawid assures her that the closest
(naastes) ones are in Goena se Bos, so they can search without worry
(gerustheid).
A voice (stem) on a recorder (band) tells the audience (gehoor) that it’s day
eight (die agtste dag) and Lukas is still missing.
A constable (konstabel) tells the men that they will have to accept (aanvaar)
the fact that the child is not alive (nie meer leef) anymore. Martiens agrees
(stem saam).
Barta is held upright (gestut) by Sofie and Malie. She looks old and dejected
(verslae), one can see that she has been crying a lot (opgehuil) and she is
dressed in lanfer, which is a type of material people wear (dra) when they
are in mourning (rou). Elias bows (laat sak) his head and shakes it from side to
side (heen en weer).
The voice on a recorder informs (lig in) the audience that it is now seven
(sewe) months later, August 1865. There was a great storm (groot reën) and
shortly (kort) thereafter (daarna), the ranger (boswagter) came and told
them that they found parts (dele) of a small (kleinerige) child’s skeleton
(geraamte) next to the Gouna river, amongst (tussen) the rubble (opdrifsels).
It could also have been a baboon’s (bobbejaan s’n).
Scene 2 (Toneel 2)
The Lange Kloof. Outside (buite) in front of (voor) Fiela’s house under a tree.
The audience hears how the children are chasing (aanja) the ostrich
(volstruis) towards the camp. Fiela and Selling are on stage (verhoog).
Fiela notices how Benjamin is running in front of (al voor) the ostrich (volstruis)
after she explicitly (uitdruklik) told him he can only tag along (saamgaan) if
he runs (draf) at the back. Selling tells Fiela to leave Benjamin, since he is not
one to follow the pack (een vir agter draf nie).
(This observation of Selling, makes the audience realize that Benjamin is
different, that he is a leader, that he is strong-willed.)
Selling remarks that there has been a horse cart (perdekar) riding up and
down the Kloof all week. Fiela makes it off as hawkers (smouse) and then
