Q: What do you mean by Dichotomy?
Dichotomy is an idea or classification split into two. Dichotomy is a contrast between two
things. When there a two ideas especially two opposite ideas. Ferdinand de Saussure was the
first person who emphasis on the necessity of distinguishes between two approaches.

The following are some dichotomies given by different linguist.



 Synchronic And Diachronic:
Synchronic Linguistics is the study of language at a given point in time. This point in time can
also be a specific point in the past. This branch of linguistics attempts to study the function of
language without referencing to earlier or later stages. This field analyze and describes how
language is used by a group of people in a speech community. This involves analyzing grammar,
classification and arrangement of the features of a language.

Diachronic Linguistics basically refers to the study of language through different periods of
time. Thus, it studies the historical development of language through different periods of time.
Main concerns of diachronic linguistics is describing and accounting for observed changes in
particular languages, reconstructing the history of language, determining their connection,
grouping them into language families and developing general theories about how and why
language changes.

The Main difference between Synchronic and Diachronic is their focus or viewpoint of study.
Diachronic is the historical study of language whereas Synchronic is the geographical study of
language. Diachronic focuses on subjects such as comparative, etymology, language evolution
while synchronic focuses on grammar, classification, arrangement of the features of language.
Synchronic study is dependent on diachronic study without a diachronic study it is impossible to
get the synchronic study.
