Imperialism and Exploitation

Social Darwinism is basically stating all the people who become successful or powerful

in the world do so because they are born with it or inherit it. It is saying that only the strongest

will survive or get to a position of power. As stated on the History channel website, it’s the belief

of “survival of the fittest” (History.com, 2018, p. 1). Not only does social Darwinism stand and

support these ideas, but this belief system has been used to justify racism in history and can be

seen used in today’s society without people even realizing it.

Motivations and Consequences

Rudyard Kipling wrote the White Man’s Burden poem to send to governor Theodore

Roosevelt, with the hope to push the idea of imperialism in the country. He was pro-imperialism

simply for the fact that it would look good to other powerful nations. Imperialism uses the

military or their forces to become in power beyond their own boarders. This is how they extend

into other land and take over, then calling it their own for the benefit of themselves or their

country. To other nations, this can be a powerful statement or it can be detrimental. Kipling was

an award winning writer who was very well known in during the 1800s. This was written after

the Spanish-American war where Philippines were not taken over by a specific country at the

time ("What is the message of the poem "The White Man's Burden"?", 2016). A motivation he

had for writing this poem was to show that America could be superior by taking on the “burden”

of the Philippines and providing for them (Kipling, 2009, p. 359). He is suggesting that the

America should send their best citizens to very uncivilized places to end hunger and take charge

of their new captives, the native people (Osborn & McKeever, 2013). As a consequence, this

poem lead to racism in the sense that it insinuates white men are superior to others because that

is how they were born. He leaves no question as to whether the citizens in the Philippines were
