Islamophobia is the dislike of or prejudice against Islam or Muslims. We are in a generation
today where casual islamophobia is deemed as appropriate merely due to the fact that the
countries, we live in are democratic. However, islamophobia is a major issue around the
world, and it should not be ignored.
To begin with, recently the French parliament have banned the wearing of a hijab in public
for Muslim women under the age of 18. A hijab is a veil worn for women to cover their hair
and chest in order for them to remain modest in front of other men. Firstly, Muslim women
are portrayed to be getting forced to wear a hijab, however isn't it ironic how France is
forcing Muslim women to take the hijab off? It is believed that all women should be allowed
to choose what they can wear but when a Muslim woman chooses to cover her body, she isn't
allowed. This casual and normalised islamophobia is what creates discrimination for future
generations and should be stopped now. In France, the age for someone to give consent to sex
is 15, whereas the age for a girl to decide to wear a hijab is 18, make it make sense. Would
everyone react the same if wearing shorts and skirts were banned? Does a piece of fabric
really seem that scary? For some of you this may not seem that vital but if this continues,
Muslims will not even have the liberty to breathe without being condemned in the future.
Islamophobia has conditioned people from a young age to portray and stereotype the Muslim
community as 'terrorists' or 'suicide-bombers'. Men are being stereotyped by the length of
their beard and the hat on their head; this too is an example of casual stereotyping society
promotes. The depiction of Muslims as 'terrorists' is extremely ironic as in reality, it is the
Muslims that are dying in Kashmir, China, Yemen, Syria, Iraq, Afghanistan, Palestine and
many more countries. This casual stereotyping of Muslims being 'terrorists' almost
brainwashes little children to discriminate and segregate Muslims. Stereotyping along with
racism will eventually lead to major problems for the future generation.
I am sure many of you would've heard of David Walliams and his famous children's book
'Gangster Granny', however, how many of you have thought to yourselves the shopkeeper,
who has been named 'Raj', seems to be extremely stereotypical. Although some of you may
not be bothered by this, these little incidents like stereotypically naming a storeowner an
Indian guy and portraying the Asian community to be selling expired foods, will influence
the younger generation. The irony of Muslims being labelled as 'terrorists' merely due to the
fact that they have a beard and no moustache or because they wear a hijab is atrocious. Is a
piece of fabric really this frightening?
The media is also a major influencer that promotes islamophobia. On 15th March 2019, in
Al-Noor mosque, 51 innocent Muslims were killed. However, the media did not hesitate to
label the terrorist as 'mentally unstable'. Why is it that even innocent Muslims are labelled as
'terrorists'? The media jumps at the chance of filming Muslims being violent but where is the
same reply when millions of Muslims are being killed all over the world? The media chooses
to remain silent when Muslims are being raped and enslaved in Uyghur, the media chooses to
overlook the 'ethnic cleansing' happening in Palestine, the media chooses to ignore the
holocaust happening right now, the media chooses to disregard the innocent children being
slaughtered in Yemen and Afghanistan. Muslims in Kashmir and Palestine have had their
own land snatched from them. Where is humanity? Do these innocents not deserve basic
rights? Where is the same response that the media had for Black Lives Matter and
