NEA proposal
To be completed by the candidate

What are the effects of different vegetation cover and the relief of the land on infiltration
Investigation title
rates at Nettlecombe Court.

How the title links to the specification content

The title chosen corresponds to the specification point 3.1.1.1- water and carbon cycles as natural systems-
specifically discussing how the flow, infiltration varies over the Nettle combe Court drainage basin as an open
system. On a wider scale it focuses on water cycle as a natural system and how flows and transfers contribute
to the overall state of dynamic equilibrium. specification point 3.1.1.2 – the water cycle - The title links to how
the flow – infiltration is impacted by specific physical factors such as vegetation density and slope gradient.
This also links to runoff variation as this plays an important role in affecting soil infiltration capacity and the
time water will be able to infiltrate into the ground. It also ties changes in the water cycle over time,
specifically human impacts such as change in land use which could thus affect the density vegetation cover
and therefore impact upon infiltration rates. 3.1.1.5- quantitative and qualitative data. Given that infiltration
rates are numerically based quantitative data was collected to assist my analysis and presentation of field
data. As both my hypothesis are based on the factors which could effect infiltration rates, quantitative data
supports these throughout. Qualitative data was used through photographs and maps to aid my investigation.

Planned investigation hypothesis or question/sub-questions

1) The more sparsely the vegetation cover is in an area the higher the rate of infiltration.
2) The steeper the slope the lower the infiltration rate further down the slope.

Investigation focus – indication of how the enquiry will enable the candidate to address the investigation title
and explore the theme in relation to the chosen geographical area

To address the investigation title, I am picking three different vegetation zones to collect my data in. This will
include high density, partially dense and sparse vegetation cover. This will allow me to compare how my
independent variable (vegetation density) will affect my dependant carriable (infiltration rate). I will use a
variety of sampling to strategies to collect this data including random and stratified sampling to ensure my
results aren’t bias representative. Furthermore, I have chosen 3 areas of land all with contrasting slope
gradients to measure how infiltration rates vary down a slope. The 30 metres transect line will be my constant
variable and I will collect infiltration rates at every 5-metre interval down the slope. This will allow me to see
how infiltration rates either increase/decrease down different slopes with different gradients and therefore
answer my hypothesis.
