Task 1 - Creating a quiz:
For the first task in the set of team building activities we completed, the class got into
small groups in order to prepare a quiz that the other class members can participate
in and compete with each other to get the most points in the quiz. In order to create a
quiz, I got in a group with two other students and decided to use my initiative to take
the role of team leader in order to ensure that each team member were given tasks
that they needed to complete in order to make this quiz a successful event, while
making sure that team members stayed motivated throughout creating the quiz to
ensure that they worked to the best of their abilities so that we could create a high
quality quiz. In order to create the quiz, we had to work together to decide on 10
questions we can ask students in the class, while deciding on interesting topics we
could focus the quiz on to encourage participation from the individuals taking part in
this quiz. After discussing which topics to include in the quiz to find questions
relevant to the quiz topic, we decided on three topics between us after I made sure
that all team members listened to each others’ views and thoughts on what to
include in the quiz in order to get new perspectives on what the other team members
think will make a successful event to make sure that this is included in our event to
make it as successful as possible, and to make sure that I showed respect for all
team members as a team leader, while showing confidence that I felt like I could
express my own views on how the event should be run, which is an important skill to
,have as a team leader. We made sure that we did not take too long to decide on
which topics to include in the quiz, as we only had thirty minutes to create the quiz,
so I used time management skills in order to dedicate 10 minutes to discussion over
which topics to include in the quiz, and 20 minutes research time in order to find
questions which are relevant to the topics chosen by each team member. Our
agreed topics were a music round, celebrity round and a ‘name the brand from the
logo round, each topic containing four questions to ensure we met the quiz criteria of
having a minimum of 10 quiz questions. Once the quiz was made, we all stood up
and presented our quiz effectively to the other students who are participating in
answering the quiz by communicating effectively and clearly to ensure that
participants are aware of what questions they need to answer to participate in our
event. We took it in turns to ask four questions each, so that each team member had
their chance to present to the participants and contribute to the running of the event.
Overall, I believe that I was an effective team leader as the event was run smoothly,
with all of the other students responding well to the quiz by being enthusiastic for
answering the questions and participating with the event. Additionally, running and
presenting the event was done without any conflict from any of the team members
due to the fact that each team members’ views and opinions were listened to and
taken into consideration before an overall decision about the quiz was made in order
to gain new ideas and perspectives on how the quiz should be presented. However,
from creating a self-assessment and receiving a peer assessment on my
performance of being a team leader for this event, I have identified that some
aspects of the quiz could have been improved on as they did not go so well. This
includes the fact that I did not give enough of an input into helping the other team
members create the questions that they were responsible for, as I mainly just took
responsibility for creating the four questions that were involved in the topic I was
required to complete, which was for the logos round of the quiz. Additionally, the
peer assessment I have received showed that I did not effectively motivate the team
members I was working with, as I only received a 3 out of a possible score of 5 for
‘did they encourage and motivate other team members?’. In order to have improved
the event and my role as a team leader, I should have regularly made sure that team
members were aware of the task they needed to complete, were motivated to work
to the best of their ability and felt like I as the team leader contributed well to helping
them in achieving the task they have been assigned. Furthermore, we wasted time at
the start by taking a long time in order to decide which topics we should include
when coming up with questions to ask as part of our quiz, as it took around 10
minutes for a decision to be made and agreed on by all team members as for what
should be featured in the quiz event. This time could have been used more
effectively and could have helped us practise our event to make sure it went
smoothly by the time we actually had to present our quiz to the other students. I
believe that I was an effective team member, as I worked quickly and efficiently to
achieve the tasks that had been delegated to me, finding relevant questions and
research on the topic that our team had agreed on and this led to the quiz being a
success with relevant and engaging questions. During preparing and presenting this
, quiz event I was able to demonstrate listening skills, by taking into consideration any
feedback any team members had given me in order to improve the research I had
completed into finding the best logos for the logo quiz, as while creating the quiz I
received the feedback of finding logos from another website as the ones I was
originally looking at was too easy to guess, so therefore I used this feedback to find
more difficult questions to include on the quiz so when we presented it to the class it
was more challenging for class members to get an understanding of what business
the logo belonged to in the guess the logo topic of the quiz. I also showed good
organisational skills as I kept to the time limit I had been given, as we only had a
limited amount of time to discuss and complete research before we had to present
our quiz to the class, but by me being organised I was able to stick to deadlines and
we had our quiz completed well before the deadline. The action that I would take in
order to improve my performance as a team leader would be to inspire and motivate
other team members to work to their full potential and achieve success in the tasks
that have been delegated to them, as I did not know how to motivate team members
while I was completing this task and as a result of this I have been rated a low score
for ‘Did they encourage and motivate other team members?’ in the self assessment,
peer assessment and teacher assessment. Additionally, to have improved my role as
a team member I should have helped other team members in completing their own
tasks, as I mainly just focused on my own tasks instead of working as part of a team.
Additionally, I should have spoken up more to give other team members feedback
and my opinions on how the quiz could have been run successfully and to help
support them in making this event worthwhile and engaging for the students taking
part.
