COURSE PHILOSOPHY:
Nursing IV is a course of study that focuses on growth and development and nursing care of the infant,
toddler, preschooler, school age child, and adolescent. It also focuses on interferences with hormonal needs,
fluid and electrolyte needs, and psychosocial needs. The study of nursing includes consideration of the
physical, safety, psychosocial, and cultural needs of persons of various ages. The student applies knowledge of
growth and development and therapeutic communication while helping to meet basic needs and assisting
persons in coping with their present state of health. The student is an integral part of the health care team who
assists the person in meeting these needs. The course also focuses on the management of client care reflecting
current trends. The nurse of today assumes responsibility and accountability for providing safe nursing care
while working with other health care members. The student utilizes principles of communication, organization,
and management while demonstrating awareness of legal and ethical implications.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Nursing IV focuses on growth and development and nursing care of persons from infancy to adulthood who
have interferences with hormonal, fluid and electrolytes, and psychosocial basic needs. It also focuses on the
principles of managing client care. Historical events, their contribution to health care, and current issues and
trends that influence the nursing profession and health care are reviewed. The concepts of previous nursing
courses are reinforced. Clinical experiences provide opportunities for students to provide safe, effective nursing
care while working with other health team members. Principles of communication, organization, management
of client care and legal and ethical implications are emphasized.
COURSE GOAL:
To provide instruction in the Associate Degree Nursing Program (ADN) curricula to meet the needs of
students for entry level employment through the hours of the ADN program in compliance with MDCC
requirements for graduation and the criteria established by the governing boards of nursing.
