, Week 5-Cyclothymia Blog

Cyclothymic disorder is a mild yet chronic mental health mood disorder that consists of

fluctuating episodes of hypomania and depression over the course of a year for adolescents and

two years for adults and affects approximately one percent of the general population (Sadock,

Sadock, & Ruiz, 2015). However, the symptoms are not severe enough to fit a diagnosis of a

manic episode or a major depressive episode, therefore, cyclothymia renders its own diagnosis.

The following blog will discuss signs and symptoms associated with cyclothymia,

pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatments, as well as possible resources and referrals

for adolescents with cyclothymic disorder.

Signs and Symptoms

Cyclothymic disorder manifests as multiple periods of hypomanic and depressive

symptoms for at least one year and the symptoms being present at least half of the time, with no

more than two consecutive months showing no symptoms. Specific symptoms of depressed

mood may include feeling sad, irritable, they may get agitated or frustrated easily; tearful;

restless, such as having a hard time relaxing; feelings of guilt or worthlessness; loss of energy;

sleep disturbances, such as sleeping more or less, or difficulty falling or staying asleep;

diminished concentration or losing focus easily; and thoughts of harming self or others, or

suicide (NIMH, 2020). Specific symptoms seen with hypomania may include feeling very high

and on top of the world; jumpy or wired with increased energy; talking faster than normal; racing

thoughts; eating less than normal; sleeping less than normal; multitasking; having poor judgment

by doing they should not do, and feeling like they are very important or powerful (NIMH, 2020).

Symptoms of cyclothymia are not related to any other substance or medical condition and may

cause clinically significant distress in social functioning such as school or sports (APA, 2013).
