DIE PADDAPRINS
To my fellow (mede) Eldo’s
1. Once upon a time in Eldoland, there was a girl with a cellphone without
reception (opvangs). She usually (gewoonlik) spent (deurgebring) her
breaks (pouses) next (langs) to the tuck shop (snoepie), but on this specific
day, she had to (moes) call her mom because she forgot (vergeet) her LO-
assignment (taak) at home.
2. The girl started searching (soek) everywhere (oral) for signal (sein), but to

air (lug) around (om) her started to feel. She looked (gekyk) around (rond),
but she couldn’t (kon nie) actually (eintlik) see something (iets). A fence
(heining) appeared (opgedoem) in front of her.
4. She stopped at the fence (draad) with her cellphone in her hand. There was
signal (sein)!!! She typed in (ingetik) the number with shaky (bewende)
hands. Suddenly (skielik) a hoarse (heserig) voice (stem) asked loudly
(hard) behind (agter) her: “Wat are you doing here?!” She got such a big

5. She turned around (omgedraai) with a fright (verskrik). The voice (stem)
belonged (behoort) to a guy she has never (nog nooit) seen in the
passages (stoepe) before. He definitely looked radically different (anders)
with his stretched out (uitgerekte) jersey (trui). “Who are you?” she
wondered with a little (piepklein) stem (voice). He didn’t answer her

7. “Yes, ok! But not today – maybe (miskien) tomorrow,” she said miserably
(flou). He looked at her from his high vantage point (hoogte). “Promise

Then the guy with the jersey lithely (rats) climbed (geklim) over the fence
and landed in a small cloud (wolkie) of dust (stof) on the other side
(oorkant). He picked up (opgetel) the cellphone in one movement
(beweging) and climbed over (oor) the fence (draad) again. When she had
her phone in her hands, she quickly (haastig) left (padgee). “Remember
(onthou)!” he called (aangeroep) after her, but she was gone (weg) already
(klaar).
8. The next day the girl almost (amper) completely (heeltemal) forgot about
the guy with the jersey (trui) when he suddenly came walking towards her
(aangeloop). The bell (klok) for break (pouse) already (alreeds) rang (gelui)
and she couldn’t’ avoid (vermy) him. She also (ook) couldn’t hide
(wegsteek) the miserable (mistroostige) expression (uitdrukking) on her
face (gesig), but the only thing that the guy with the jersey does, is say:
“You promised (belowe).”
9. And so it happened (gekom) that she started (begin) walking (stap) to the
tuck shop (snoepie) with a sick feeling (gevoel) in her stomach (maag), the
guy with the jersey hot on (kort agter) her heels (hake). This is the end of
her social life! She just (net) knows it! What are the people going to think
of her?
10. The closer (nader) she got to the snoepie, the quieter (stiller) the green
cladded (groengeklede) crowd (skare) became. She bought 2 cans
