One future concern that is likely to impact public health is the funding that is received from the state
and/or federal level. Kulbok and associates stated, “The important skills of analytic assessment, cultural
competence, program planning, and community dimensions of practice are critical for pursuing
community health promotion goals as public health nurses become more widely involved in community
participatory approaches,” (2012). We fight on a daily basis to make sure our paperwork is exact so that
we can maintain the proper funds to keep things going. Many times our skills are not enough.
According to Nies, “AIDS continues to be a grave global concern,” (p. 274, 2015). Depending on what
part of the country you live in, you may not realize how much this is becoming a concern. Living in the
midwest for many years, I hardly ever came in to contact with someone with HIV, let alone with
someone with AIDS. Now that I work in the Tamps, Florida area I see it on a regular basis. It is common
to have at least one patient a night that has HIV. In the last two years that I have been in Florida I have
had 3 patients that their ages ranged from 40-55 that died due to complications of having AIDS. It truly is
scary to think about how many people are living with this disease, and to also think about what it will be
like in 10 years from now.
This course has opened my eyes to what a community nurse can do. Our lesson states, “Community
health nurses will do what they have always done to make a difference in the health of individuals,
families, aggregates, and communities,” (2016). I do not think there is a more true statement. The
biggest impact that I have seen is where the home health nurse comes in. My eyes have been opened to
how hard they work on a daily basis to take care of their patients. They go above and beyond.
