Discuss the events that have contributed (or will continue to contribute) to the nursing
shortage, or that contribute to a shortage in a region or specialty. Discuss at least one way
that the nursing profession is currently working toward a resolution of this problem. In
replies to peers, offer different examples of how the nursing shortage has been addressed in
your state, community, or specialty area.
There is an acute shortage of nurses in the US. Currently, the country has many hospitals that are
in dire need of professionals to fill the positions of professional nurses. In the view of increasing
role of the primary care in the US health care delivery system, the acute shortage of nurses is
likely to affect overall health care delivery. There are different factors contributing to nursing
shortage in the US such as that majority of nurses are retiring and the country does not have
professionals to fill these positions. Further, the health needs of patients are evolving, and hence
a requirement of specialized nurses to cater for such needs. There are high turnover rates among
nurses, another key factor contributing to acute nursing shortage in the US. There are also
evolving education needs of nurses, such that the current ones are supposed to advance their
education. When nurses leave the hospitals to further their education, shortage is felt. By the
virtue that nurses primary care role cannot be underestimated, it is necessary that solutions are
formulated to solve it (Haddad, Annamaraju, & Toney-Butler, 2020). The solution can only be
found when different agencies such as government, professional nursing bodies such as IOM,
and the Center for Disease Control work together. One way of solving the problem is making the
profession attractive by giving bonuses to returning nurses. Further, increased funding is
necessary especially in the nursing schools. In the state of Georgia, the federal government has
increased its funding to nursing education and research. Owing to increased funding, a positive
trend has been seen where many nurses have been enrolled in colleges and universities in the
state, and countrywide.
