CHEM 162 Experiment #5: Spectrochemical Series
Goals of this lab:
• Produce a copper coordination compound and evaluate the yield
• Calculate d-orbital splitting energies from spectral data in nanometers
• Apply Crystal Field Theory to the comparison of ligand field strengths among groups of
coordination complexes
• Assess the accuracy of experimental data and identify sources of error
Your lab report will be graded on the following criteria using a poor/good/excellent rating
system:
• Calculations are complete are accurate, with proper use of significant figures and units
• Data collected is reasonable
• Lab report is clear, legible, and neat
• Error analysis is well-supported and valid
By signing below, you certify that you have not falsified data, that you have not plagiarized
any part of this lab report, and that all calculations and responses other than the reporting
of raw data are your own independent work. Failure to sign this declaration will result in 5
points being deducted from your lab score.

This lab is worth 60 points: 10 points for notebook pages, 50 points for the lab report.
(Do NOT include your notebook pages when you scan your report for upload into Gradescope.)
Laboratory Waste Evaluation
Laboratory waste is considered anything generated during an experiment that is disposed of down the sewer drain,
thrown in the garbage, collected in a container for disposal by the UW Environmental Health & Safety department,
or released into the environment. Based on the written lab procedure and your actions during the lab, list the
identity and approximate amount (mass or volume) of waste that you generated while performing this experiment.

Part A: Preparation of cis-Bis(glycinato)copper(II) monohydrate, Cu(gly)2·H2O
mass CuSO4·5H2O 0.5000 g
mass NH2CH2CO2H (glycine) 0.2560 g
molar mass CuSO4·5H2O 249.69 g/mole
moles CuSO4·5H2O 0.002002 moles
molar mass NH2CH2CO2H (glycine) 75.070 g/mole
moles NH2CH2CO2H (glycine) Note: the molecular formula for 0.003410 moles
the complex will give you
limiting reagent is information about the reaction NH2CH2CO2H
stoichiom etry for determining
the limiting reagent.
molar mass Cu(gly)2·H2O 229.70 g/mole
(Note for molar mass: each glycine loses the acidic proton in order to be a bidentate ligand)
mass Cu(gly)2·H2O expected based on limiting reagent 0.3916 g
mass Cu(gly)2·H2O recovered 0.8930 g
% Yield 228.02 %
Discuss your % yield. It is high or low? What are the contributing factors to this high or low %
yield?
Our experiment's percent yield was 276.18%, which is very high. A high percent yeild could be because the
sample didn't dry properly. This would have resulted in the extra weight from the water, which would give
the sample a higher mass. Another factor could be the addition of sodium bicarbonate, which could've
skewed the mass.
