Task 1 – Donating Christmas Cards and Baking a cake for a local residential care home.

P5- demonstrate work-related skills to meet set objectives for work experience tasks
M3- demonstrate work-related skills with confidence and proficiency to meet objectives in different
situations
D2 – demonstrate work-related skills proficiently, taking the initiative to carry out activities according to
own responsibilities and setting’s procedures and selecting appropriate skills and techniques for different
situations.

What skills, behaviours and attributes did I demonstrate while carrying out this task?
Whilst carrying out this task I demonstrated a variety of skills and attributes in order to perform the task to
the best of my ability. One of the skills that I demonstrated was to be creative, this skill was needed in
particular as when designing the Christmas cards, I had to choose an appropriate style for the specific age
group being the elderly which would be easily understandable and could create a heart-warming feeling for
themselves. I had to demonstrate that I was creative as it was crucial to completing this non-clinical task.
We can identify how this skill is beneficial as if the task would need to be adapted in anyway, the skill can
be adapted. For example, if the Christmas cards needed to be designed for a young child, then I could
choose a style more appropriate for that age group and a simpler message that would appeal to that
specific age group. This shows us how adaptable creativity is. We can see from Jessica Carson (2020) that
creativity allows us to view and solve problems more openly and with innovation. This means that to be
creative is a great skill as it will help me to solve any problems within this task. However, we could find that
being creative takes up a lot of time which can cause the task to be very long, or even cause rushing to
meet the deadline which should be avoided. We can also see that we would have to take some things into
account when completing this task so being creative is a benefit because it enables the problem-solving
skills. For example, within this task I baked a cake to donate to the residential home, this would not be safe
for individuals with allergies, those with dietary needs, and those who can only eat certain foods for
religious purposes. This suggests that although being creative assists me in solving this issue, I cannot
solve this problem because there are numerous factors to consider, and I do not have the information
provided for me.

I also demonstrated exceptional time management skills as I had approximately 16 hours to choose the
cards that I wished to use, write a message to the elderly resident that may be subject to receiving it,
packaging the cards up and delivering them to the residential care home. I believe that I used time-
management skills because I had to prioritise and plan the steps of the task before I started to complete
the task, this was to ensure that the task went smoothly and was completed on time, which was before
Christmas in my case. By using time management skills to complete this task I was able to feel in control
and on top of my workload, rather than worried and stressed. There are many benefits of having good
time-management skills, especially when completing this specific task. It is shown by GIIS Tokyo (nd), that
having effective time-management skills is beneficial because it reduces stress as well as boosting
confidence and improving career opportunities, but it aids in achieving goals faster and prioritising tasks.
This means that demonstrating time-management not only improved my performance when completing
the task but as I developed it thoroughly, it can aid me in future activities. I believe that having good time-
management skills allowed me to feel less stressed as each part of the activity was taken in good time, and
I didn’t feel rushed during any of the process. Having good time-management skills was useful for this task
but may not be for others, this is because if I was completing an activity with a dementia patient, then I
may have to complete tasks slower than I would if I was doing the task independently, this is because they
have different needs so the approach would need to be adapted, this could lead to deadlines being missed
which is a disadvantage and suggest that time-management is not always successful.

I also had to demonstrate the following attributes during this task, one of these being compassion.
Compassion is needed to complete this task because the older age group of nearing the end of their lives
and having to live within a residential care home can take a toll on their health and wellbeing as they lose
an aspect of their independence. During this time, it can be exceptionally harder due to the festive
celebrations that are usually spent surrounding family of which these people may not have, this means
that they may feel lonely and experience distress. Due to this compassion is needed because it allows me
to feel somewhat the physical, mental, and emotional pains that this age group could potentially feel at
this festive time. From this, donating Christmas cards can produce an adverse reaction so being able to

,show compassion and have a vast expectation of their reaction is needed as this kind gesture could
potentially make a resident’s day or produce an emotional reaction due to the emotions they are currently
experiencing. It is known that there are many benefits of having the attribute compassion and is necessary
for the successful completion of this task, this is because to take on a caring approach is essential
especially when conversating with vulnerable adults who may be distressed in some way. We can see from
Newport Academy (2018), that compassion is the ability to understand the emotional state of another
person. It is beneficial for me to develop this attribute because it allows me to develop my understanding
of my own emotional state which in turn can motivate myself to help and support others and myself, this
means to look after my own well-being as well as others around me. This attribute can also be seen as
being beneficial because my future career choice of a paramedic will be benefitted in this case as I will
have some preparation work in place, this is because this attribute works to ease another person’s
suffering which is much needed in the health and social care profession of a paramedic. We can also see
from Mindfulness & Clinical psychology solutions (2021), that compassion also develops many other
attributes, like awareness, empathy, courage, a caring nature, strength, and persistence. This is very
beneficial because these are all attributes that are needed within the health and social care sector but will
also aid myself upon the completion of this task. However, compassion isn’t as needed within this task as
the skill of being creative, it is extremely beneficial and essential but if the creativity aspect of this task is
removed then the task will be very difficult to complete, and I will have many obstacles to face that are
easily avoided with being creative. Being compassionate is a very equal attribute that can adapt to meet
individual preferences and needs, this is extremely useful because it means that there will be no barriers
when completing this task, this is because each and every individual benefits from sympathy and that is
the foundation of what compassion stands for.

I also had to demonstrate the attribute of being caring, this is because the task I completed require myself
to be caring towards the elderly individuals, due to this particular time of year I had to develop an
approach that wasn’t too dull nor overwhelming and would produce a positive effect on their health and
wellbeing. There are a vast number of benefits that follow from being a caring individual and showing the
caring attribute towards others. This task needed to have the attribute of caring shown as it was focused
through completing a kind gesture to the elderly aged group. We can see from Mental Health Foundation
(2020), that having the attribute of being caring not only when completing this task but in general, is
beneficial for own wellbeing as it can reduce stress as well as improving mood, self-esteem, and happiness.
This approach has no negative aspects because it’s focused on helping others, which in turn helps
ourselves. Demonstrating the attribute of being caring during this task was beneficial because the
residents that were receiving the Christmas cards and cake may feel scared or somewhat distressed, and
by taking a caring approach this can reduce any unwanted feelings that may be present at that specific
time. It is also known that having the attribute of being caring can encourage individuals including myself
to be more active, and it can boost support networks, there is scientific evidence that suggests that when a
caring approach is given that there are changes within the brain that are linked with happiness. It could be
said that this attribute inclusive in the terms that it works for all individuals regardless of capacity and
background, this means that factors such as religion don’t need to be considered when being caring
because all individuals have the right to a caring experience regardless of their beliefs.

During this task I learnt that doing a kind deed is not just beneficial to my wellbeing but the use of being
creative, compassionate, caring, and adequate time-management skills are all relevant to my aspiring
career of being a paramedic. This means that by undertaking this task, these skills and attributes can be
developed and improved which is extremely beneficial in terms of my career for the future. I also learnt
that when being caring towards individuals it’s important to maintain an open mind because each
individual may react differently, and these reactions may not always be positive so it’s important that
although this activity is good, it can lead to verbal abuse from residents if they have certain health
conditions that mean they could react in this way. From this activity, I gained a perspective into the
emotional wellbeing of the older age group at Christmas and although many individuals from the
adolescence age group are excited and show positive emotions, this is not as prevalent around this certain
age group. For example, the residents overall weren’t in an uplifting mindset which is due to loved ones not
being there during festive times whether this is because they have passed on or for other reasons, this has
led to the residents feeling less happy than they would be at a different time of year. This task worked for
some individuals at the care home, but not for others. This is because the Christmas cards were suited to
those that celebrate Christmas so if there are individuals who identify as Muslim, this would not be suitable

, for them. The cake I also baked didn’t accommodate anyone with dietary requirements or allergies, so it
could only be served to residents who didn’t need to avoid certain foods or have adapted foods so overall
there were some things I would do differently if I was to complete the task again. This would be to label the
allergens in the cake so that it was completely safe for most residents to consume, and to look at cards
that celebrate a religion specific to the residents at the residential care home.
What feedback did I receive?
From completion of this task, I received positive feedback from a variety of people, this includes peers and
family members for completing this good deed within the community. The residents within the care home
were also happy and I witnessed a positive reaction from handing out the Christmas cards, this can be seen
through the residents crying and thanking myself for this act of kindness that I demonstrated. I also
received feedback from my mentor that I acted professionally and that they were happy of the effort I put
into the task.
What went well?
I believe following this task that it went well because I was able to gain a positive reaction from this non-
clinical task, it also allowed me to develop my caring and compassionate attributes which will be beneficial
if I am required to complete a task similar to this in the future. The objective that I set myself for this task
was to have filled out and delivered this Christmas cards before a certain date, and I was successful in
meeting my objective for this task. I know this because I met the deadline that I set for myself without
rushing and I felt confident that I was ready to deliver the Christmas cards to the residents knowing that I
have completed the handwritten messages with compassion but also upkeeping a professional manner.
Which factors may have influenced my performance?
I think that I had the influence of factors which would have improved my performance, this is because
when I was handwriting the messages for the cards, I had the assistance of a family member to complete
these in time for the deadline, which meant that I had the extra help and guidance which allowed my task
to be successful. I also believe that because I have completed a task similar to this in the past, I had extra
confidence on what to expect and how I could complete this task to the best of my ability. I was also aware
of the personal issues that the residents within the residential care home may be facing, such as the
feelings of loneliness, and feeling somewhat emotional due to the time of year that this task was
completed as it was Christmas. I also believed that factors that could have affected my performance
further was the knowledge I have within the health and social care sector prior to completing the task. For
example, I knew to wear my St. John Ambulance Cadet uniform as it shows professionalism around the
setting and the uniform is made with certain fabric that is easy to keep clean for infection prevention and
control purposes. I was also aware of the settings policies and procedures through interacting with the
residents, from this I ensured to bring my completed DBS check along with me, this was so that the
residential care home could ensure the safety of their residents by making sure that I was safe to work with
vulnerable adults.
P6- Discuss ways in which work shadowing and observation can support development of own skills while on
work placement

How did work shadowing or observing others whilst completing the task help my performance?
I believe that work shadowing and observing others influenced my progress throughout this task because it
allowed me to gain insight into what exactly what expected of me and a general overall expectation of how
the task was to be carried out. During the handing out of the Christmas cards around the residential care
home I gained insight into the role of a care assistant as I witnessed many of them doing their daily job
role, and from this I was able to gain an awareness into their responsibilities that they must uphold whilst
providing care to residents. For example, as this task was completed in a time when COVID-19 was an
ongoing pandemic, it was required that to adhere by the infection prevention and control procedures to
wear a mask and wash hands before and after contact with the residents. The setting also had its own
policies that a lateral flow test must be conducted before the visit to ensure safety of the residents and
staff within the care home. I also believe that by observing others my performance was affected in a
positive way because I was enabled to develop a greater idea of how different individuals worked together
within the residential care home, and I also was able to develop a basic understanding of the layout of a
residential home and the different aids that are used to assist the residents that live there. For example,
within horse fair care home they have numerous staff ranging from care assistants, senior care assistants
and agency workers who are all integrated within the residential home to provide the most appropriate and
