Week 1 Discussion: Social Causes of
Suicide
Initial Post Instructions
Sociologist C. Wright Mills preferred to call the sociological perspective the
sociological imagination, and he saw it transforming personal troubles into public
issues. Let us begin our discussion this week by considering suicide, which is
thoroughly explored in Chapter 1 of the textbook.
For the initial post, address the following:

 How does the sociological imagination help to examine private acts such as
suicide within a larger societal context?

 What are some examples of social forces influencing youth suicide trends in the
United States, suicide trends in India, and suicide trends in the U.S. military?

 Use the sociological imagination to explain your observations, and how the
sociological imagination helps us consider the causes and possible solutions to
suicide.

I find the sociological imagination to be a very interesting concept because it places
yourself within the billions of people in this world and how your one action is not only
influenced by society, but also has an influence on society (Kendall, 2018). While we
may feel like a tiny meaningless part of the population and society, we actually play a
bigger role than we might think. What we do is directly influenced by those around us
and our past experiences, but also has that same effect on those who surround us and
the future of society.

Suicide has become an unfortunately common occurrence that we have almost become
immune to because of how regularly we hear about it. Unless it is affecting us directly, it
does not necessarily make an impact on our daily lives. Society as a whole, though,
has become affected by suicide based on the different factors that can lead to it. There
are three populations focused on in Sociology in Our Times that I had no realized were
affected by the social imagination as much as they have been. Suicide is influenced
greatly by social media use in the United States, the high rates of Post Traumatic Stress
Disorder in U.S. military personnel and the huge economic boom occurring in India
(Kendall, 2018).

Social media has seen rapid growth in recent years and has completely changed the
way people interact with each other and even how children learn. Social media has
such great benefits but on the contrary it has some major disadvantages that can wreak
havoc on impressionable children, teenagers and even adults. Cyberbullying is
