Chapter 9
1. According to Erikson, what is the developmental task of adolescence? (p. 302)
Erikson argued that adolescents face a crisis between identity and role confusion.
o This crisis involves balancing the desire to try out many possible selves
and the need to select a single self.
o Adolescents who achieve a sense of identity are well prepared to face the
nest developmental challenge: establishing intimate, sharing relationships
with others.
2. Describe adolescent egocentrism. Imaginary audience, personal fable and illusion of
invulnerability. (p. 303-304)
Adolescent egocentrism
o Is the self-absorption that is characteristic of teenagers as they search for
an identity.
Imaginary audience
o Adolescents’ feeling that their behavior is constantly being watched by
their peers.
Personal fable
o Attitude of many adolescents that their feeling and experiences are unique
and have never been experienced by anyone else.
Illusion of invulnerability
o Adolescents’ belief that misfortunes cannot help them.
3. What is the most effective program to prevent teenage pregnancy? (p. 311)
Birth control and using it correctly
, 4. What does research indicate about adolescents and sexual orientation? (pp. 312-313)
For most adolescents, dating and romance involve member of the opposite sex.
However, in earlt and mid-adolescents, roughly 15% of teen experience a period
of sexual questioning during which they sometimes repoet emotional and sexual
attractions to members of their own sex. About 5% of teenage boys and girls
identify themselves as gay or lesbian.
5. What are the guidelines to arm young women against date rape? (p. 314)
Know your own sexual policies; decide when sexual intimacy is acceptable for
you.
Communicate these policies open and clearly.
Avoid being alone with a person until you have communicated these polices and
believe that you can trust that person.
Avoid using alcohol or other drugs when you are with a person whom you do not
wish to become sexually intimate.
If someone tries to force you to have sex, make your objections known: talk first,
but struggle and scream if necessary.
6. What are the reasons part-time work can be harmful to adolescents? (p. 318)
School performance suffers.
o When student work more that approximately 15-20 hours per week, they
become less engaged in school and are less likely to be successful in
college, particularly if they are relatively affluent European Americans.
Mental health and behavioral problems.
o Adolescents who work long hours – more than 15 to 20 hours a week – are
more likely to experience anxiety and depression, and their self-esteem
often suffers.
Teens learn bad habits for handling money.
o Adults sometimes argue that work is good for teenagers because it teaches
them the value of a dollar, but in reality, the typical teenage pattern is to
earn and spend. Working adolescents spend most of their earnings on
themselves: to buy clothings, snack food, or cosmetics and pay for
entertainment. Few working teens set aside much of their income from
future goals, such as a college education, or use it to contribute to their
family’s expenses.
7. What substance is most likely to be used by adolescents? (p. 320)
Alcohol
o About 2/3 of the U.S. high school seniors have drunk alcohol within the
past year, and nearly half report that they’ve been drunk.
