Complementary and alternative medicine strategies for nursing. (FUND ATI, pg. 234)
 Guided imagery/visualization therapy-Encourages healing and relaxation of the body by having the
mind focus on images.
 Healing intention- uses caring, compassion and empathy in the context of prayer to facilitate healing
 Breathwork- reduces stress and increase relaxation through various breathing patterns
 Humor- Reduces tension and improves mood foster coping
 Meditation- use rhythmic breathing to calm the mind and body.
 Simple touch- communicates presence, appreciation and acceptance.
 Music and therapy- provides distraction from the pain allow the client to express emotions, earphones
improve concentration.

a safe nonjudgmental environment.

Patient teaching with types of arthritis, rheumatoid, osteoporosis and gout
 Arthritis-
 Rheumatoid (AMS pg. 566)
o Apply heat and cold (morning stiffness, hot shower), (pain in hands and fingers, heated
paraffin), (edema, cold therapy)
o Assist with and encourage physical activity to maintain joint mobility

, o Conserve energy (space out activities, take a rest periods ask for additional assistance when
needed)
o Promote coping strategies and routine health screenings
o Provide safe environment (physical and occupational therapy, remove unnecessary equipment
or supplies, use assistive device)
o Teach client regarding sign and symptoms that needed to report immediately (fever, infection,
pain upon inspiration, pain in the substernal area of the chest)
o Encourage foods high in vitamins, protein and iron
o Eat small frequent meals
o If taking NSAIDs take it with food and full glass of water or milk, avoid alcohol and instruct client
to observe for GI bleeding (coffee ground, emesis and tarry stool)
o If taking Corticosteroids instruct client to observe changes in vision, blood glucose and impaired
healing, avoid crowds, follow prescription such as alternative day dosing, tapering and
discontinuing medication.
 Osteoporosis (AMS pg. 445)
o Encourage weight bearing exercises as tolerated. (30 minutes 3 to 5 times a week) improve
strength and reduce bone loss.
o Instruct client and family regarding dietary calcium food sources. Provide information regarding
calcium and vitamin D supplementation (take with food)
o Reinforce vitamin D (moderate sun exposure using sunscreen, fortified milk
o Instruct client need adequate amount of protein, magnesium, vitamin K and trace minerals.
o Limit caffeine, alcohol, and carbonated beverages, which can increase bone loss.
o Assess home environment for safety (remove throw rugs, provide adequate lightning and clear
walkways) to prevent falls.
 Gout (AMS pg.561)
o Stay on low purine diet (includes no organ meat and shellfish)
o Teach client to limit alcohol intake
o Avoid starvation diets, aspirin and diuretics
o Limit physical stress and emotional
o Remind client increase fluid intake
o Encourage medication adherence.

Patient teaching and nursing care of patients following hip replacement (AMS pg.437)
 Nursing Care
o Provide post-operative care and prevent complications
o Check dressing site frequently, noting any evidence of bleeding, monitor drainage from surgical
drains.
o Monitor labs values, including HGB and HCT levels.
o Monitor the neurovascular status of the surgical extremity (movement, sensation, color, pulse,
capillary refill and compare with contralateral extremity every 3 to 4 hr.)
o Provide medications (antibiotic, analgesics, anticoagulant)
o Provide early ambulation (apply ice as non-pharmacological to decrease pain)
o Place the client supine with head slightly elevated and affected leg in neutral position
o Place pillow or abduction device to between legs when turning to unaffected side. Patient
should not be turned to the operative side it could cause hip dislocation.
o Monitor new onset hip dislocation: acute pain, report hearing a “POP”, internal rotation in
affected extremity and shorten affected extremity.
